Job Summary

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Respiratory Therapy Extern to join our team at Advocate Aurora Health. As a Respiratory Therapy Extern, you will have the opportunity to work alongside our experienced respiratory therapists and gain hands-on experience in providing high-quality patient care.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist licensed respiratory therapists in performing routine and basic level respiratory therapy procedures, including oxygen therapy, pulse oximetry, aerosol therapy, and incentive spirometry.
  • Organize and maintain a supply of respiratory therapy equipment and supplies, adhering to department-specific standards.
  • Collect and clean equipment, processing disposable and non-disposable items according to infection prevention guidelines.
  • Complete annual hospital competencies and stay up-to-date with new equipment, supplies, and procedures.
  • Perform patient positioning and transporting duties, utilizing proper technique and adhering to safety protocols.
  • Provide care that is tailored to the age-specific needs of patients, demonstrating knowledge of growth and development principles.
Requirements
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited or approved program in Respiratory Therapy.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA).
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, with the ability to function independently.
Working Conditions
  • Will be required to walk, stand, squat, reach above the shoulders, and sit throughout the workday.
  • Repetitive use of hands, including simple grasping, pushing/pulling, and fine manipulation.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. from floor to waist, lift up to 20 lbs. over the head, and carry up to 40 lbs. a reasonable distance.
  • Must be able to push/pull with 30 lbs. of force and perform a sliding transfer of 150 lbs. with a second person present.
  • May be exposed to chemical and radiation hazards, as well as blood and body fluids, requiring the use of personal protective equipment.
