Position Overview:
As a Cytology Specialist, you will be responsible for processing and screening cytological specimens from various anatomical sites. You will collaborate closely with Pathologists to review and interpret findings, distinguishing between normal and abnormal cellular structures.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or an equivalent organization as a Cytotechnologist.
- State licensure in West Virginia within six months of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior experience in a laboratory setting.
Core Responsibilities:
The following duties outline the essential functions of this position:
- Conduct and evaluate both basic and advanced diagnostic procedures in accordance with standard operating procedures (SOP) to ensure accurate and reliable results.
- Assist Physicians in determining the adequacy of Fine Needle Aspiration (FNA) specimens during patient procedures.
- Accurately prepare reagents and solutions necessary for testing as per established protocols.
- Maintain an organized work area and restock supplies to support colleagues in their tasks.
- Prepare and accession patient specimens, ensuring proper collection and labeling, while addressing any discrepancies in specimen information.
- Implement quality assurance and control measures on a scheduled basis to verify the reliability of laboratory reagents and equipment.
- Address troubleshooting issues promptly and effectively, including reviewing quality control records.
- Engage in proficiency testing and reporting as required, ensuring compliance with established procedures.
- Timely verification of abnormal or critical results, notifying relevant parties as per SOP.
- Contribute to the educational initiatives of the institution to meet the evolving needs of the healthcare environment.
- Participate in the training and evaluation of new staff members as per laboratory policies.
Physical Requirements:
The physical demands of this role include:
- Ability to stand or sit for extended periods.
- Unimpaired visual acuity, with the ability to differentiate colors.
- Manual dexterity for operating laboratory instruments, including microscopes.
Working Environment:
The characteristics of the work environment include:
- Exposure to a noisy atmosphere.
- Potential for unpleasant odors.
- Requirement to wear protective apparel while performing procedures.
- Possible exposure to infectious agents from patients and specimens.
Skills and Abilities:

- Ability to operate various types of laboratory equipment.
Additional Information:
This full-time position is situated within a diverse Cytology laboratory, requiring proficiency in Pap tests, FNAs, and Non-Gyn specimens. The ideal candidate will possess ASCP certification in Cytology and the ability to critically evaluate a wide range of cytological specimens indicative of various disease states.
