Position Overview:
The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking dedicated individuals for the role of Police Officer / Law Enforcement Officer I within the Department of Police and Public Safety. The starting salary range for this position is between $45,000 and $49,000, commensurate with qualifications.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver professional law enforcement services to the university community and the surrounding area.
- Conduct patrols and respond to service calls within the designated jurisdiction.
- Investigate complaints, suspicious activities, and incidents, including traffic accidents; make arrests and issue citations as necessary.
- Safeguard life and property, addressing safety hazards and coordinating with relevant personnel.
- Enforce university policies and regulations, including those related to parking.
- Utilize communication and police equipment effectively, including vehicles.
- Manage crowds, traffic, and pedestrian flow as required.
- Prepare detailed reports, conduct investigations, and provide testimony in court and hearings.
- Ensure campus facilities are secure and well-maintained through regular patrols and necessary actions.
- Foster positive relationships with students, staff, faculty, and visitors through regular interactions and educational initiatives.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to engage effectively with a diverse population.
- Successful completion of medical, drug screening, and psychological evaluations.
- Pass an extensive background investigation, including a fingerprint-based criminal records check.
- Possession of a valid Virginia driver's license or the ability to obtain one, with a clean driving record.
- Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of hire.
- Availability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- Completion of a twelve-month probationary period.
- Qualification with a departmental issued weapon is required.
- Experience in high-stress environments is preferred, including military or emergency response backgrounds.
- Current Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Law Enforcement Certification is preferred.
- Prior experience in higher education law enforcement or security roles is advantageous.
