Position Overview:

The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking dedicated individuals for the role of Police Officer / Law Enforcement Officer I within the Department of Police and Public Safety. The starting salary range for this position is between $45,000 and $49,000, commensurate with qualifications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver professional law enforcement services to the university community and the surrounding area.
  • Conduct patrols and respond to service calls within the designated jurisdiction.
  • Investigate complaints, suspicious activities, and incidents, including traffic accidents; make arrests and issue citations as necessary.
  • Safeguard life and property, addressing safety hazards and coordinating with relevant personnel.
  • Enforce university policies and regulations, including those related to parking.
  • Utilize communication and police equipment effectively, including vehicles.
  • Manage crowds, traffic, and pedestrian flow as required.
  • Prepare detailed reports, conduct investigations, and provide testimony in court and hearings.
  • Ensure campus facilities are secure and well-maintained through regular patrols and necessary actions.
  • Foster positive relationships with students, staff, faculty, and visitors through regular interactions and educational initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Ability to engage effectively with a diverse population.
  • Successful completion of medical, drug screening, and psychological evaluations.
  • Pass an extensive background investigation, including a fingerprint-based criminal records check.
  • Possession of a valid Virginia driver's license or the ability to obtain one, with a clean driving record.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of hire.
  • Availability to work rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Completion of a twelve-month probationary period.
  • Qualification with a departmental issued weapon is required.
  • Experience in high-stress environments is preferred, including military or emergency response backgrounds.
  • Current Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Law Enforcement Certification is preferred.
  • Prior experience in higher education law enforcement or security roles is advantageous.
