Job SummaryWe are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Part-Time Firefighter to join our team at the City of O'Fallon, IL. As a Part-Time Firefighter, you will be responsible for responding to emergency and non-emergency incidents, performing firefighting and lifesaving tasks, and maintaining fire department equipment and facilities.
Key Responsibilities- Respond to emergency and non-emergency incidents in a timely and safe manner as a member of an O'Fallon Fire Rescue company.
- Complete daily, weekly, and monthly inspections and maintenance of fire department equipment, vehicles, and facilities.
- Participate in fire prevention tasks, including fire safety presentations and installing smoke detectors as part of the community risk reduction program.
- Conduct company-level pre-plan inspections of local businesses as part of the overall fire safety inspection and code enforcement program.
- Participate in required training and drills to maintain a high level of job performance knowledge and skills for various duties.
- Drive and operate all department front-line apparatus, including engines, ladder trucks, and rescue squad or other vehicles in an emergency mode with emergency lights and sirens.
- Complete day-to-day electronic record keeping, including incident reports, maintenance logs, and training records.
- Maintain an adequate level of physical fitness to perform firefighting, rescue, equipment operation, and other related tasks.
- Maintain a professional appearance and promote positive relationships with the citizens.
- Communicate effectively using both oral and written communication.
- Comprehend and follow verbal and written directions or communications.
- Distinguish colors, symbols, markings on buildings, vehicles, containers, etc.
- Function as an integral component of a team, where sudden incapacitation can result in mission failure or risk of injury or death to members of the public or other team members.
- Work in shifts, including during nighttime, that can extend beyond 12 hours.
- Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) while performing firefighting tasks and other emergency response actions under stressful conditions.
- Wear respirators required by the jurisdiction, including a demand-valve-type positive-pressure facepiece or filter respirator, achieving a successful fit-test and tolerating increased respiratory workloads.
- Exposure to toxic fumes, irritants, particulates, biological (i.e., infectious) and nonbiological hazards, or heated gases, despite the use of PPE and SCBA.
- Climb at least six flights of stairs or walk a similarly strenuous distance and incline in jurisdictions without tall buildings while wearing PPE and SCBA.
- Wear PPE and SCBA that is encapsulating and insulated, which will result in significant fluid loss that frequently progresses to clinical dehydration and can elevate core temperature to levels exceeding 102.2°F (39°C).
- Work alone while wearing PPE and respirators required by the jurisdiction, searching, finding, and rescue-dragging or carrying victims to safety in hazardous conditions and low visibility.
- Advance water-filled hose lines up to 1 3/4 in. (45 mm) in diameter from fire apparatus to occupancy [approximately 150 ft (50 m)], which can involve negotiating multiple flights of stairs, ladders, and other obstacles.
- Climb ladders, operate from heights, walk or crawl in the dark along narrow and uneven surfaces that might be wet or icy, and operate in proximity to electrical power lines or other hazards.
- Unpredictable, prolonged periods of extreme physical exertion as required by emergency operations without benefit of a warm-up period, scheduled rest periods, meals, access to medication(s), or hydration.
- Critical, time-sensitive, complex problem solving during physical exertion in stressful, hazardous environments, including hot, dark, tightly enclosed spaces, that is further aggravated by fatigue, flashing lights, sirens, and other distractions.
- Communicate while wearing PPE and respirators required by the jurisdiction, under conditions of high background noise, poor visibility, and drenching from hose lines or fixed protection systems (e.g., sprinklers).
- Carry 125lb object for 100ft.
- Lift floor to waist 125lb.
- Drag 125lb dummy 50ft.
- Generate a push & pull force of 100lb minimum.
- Fire Fighter II/Basic Operations Firefighter certification (OSFM, ProBoard, IFSAC).
- Must possess a State of Illinois non-CDL Class B driver's license.
- Successful completion of initial and annual NFPA 1582 medical and physical agility screenings.
