Job Summary:

As a Clinical Laboratory Scientist at Kaiser Permanente, you will play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and reliability of laboratory test results. Your expertise will be essential in performing pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical phase testing of various complexities, including specialized tests and analysis in areas such as Hematology, Microbiology, Clinical Chemistry, Urinalysis, Immunohematology, Serology, Parasitology, and chemical and morphological examinations. You will work closely with healthcare professionals to provide high-quality patient care and maintain confidentiality on all tests performed by the laboratory.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Uphold Kaiser Permanente's policies and procedures, as well as applicable state, federal, and local laws.
  • Provide exceptional patient care, maintaining confidentiality on all tests performed by the laboratory.
  • Perform and report test results for all clinical laboratory procedures, both automated and manual, in the clinical laboratory department.
  • Demonstrate proficiency, competency, and understanding of fundamental principles of clinical laboratory procedures with minimal supervision.
  • Monitor and be accountable for test data, quality control, quality assurance, preventive maintenance, proficiency testing, and all operations related to laboratory testing procedures.
  • Notify the supervisory team of any irregularities or factors that may influence test results.
  • Ability to troubleshoot equipment and test methods.
  • Identify and resolve unusual laboratory situations and notify appropriate parties within the shift.
  • Consult with physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals on the technical aspects of methodologies used, appropriateness of test utilization, and interpretation of patient results.
  • Instruct new employees and/or Clinical Laboratory Scientist students in laboratory procedures within the assigned area, enabling them to develop proficiency and understanding of clinical laboratory methodology.
  • Provide training, guidance, and pertinent technical information to Laboratory Assistants, support staff, clerks, CLS students, and Medical Center personnel.
  • Discuss clinical laboratory problems of mutual interest with the supervisory team and lead technologist to develop a better communication link within the department.
  • Participate in work groups to address problems, issues, or goals of the department.
  • Assist in evaluating new test procedures when requested and communicate to the supervisory team the possibilities for their implementation.
  • Meet state requirements for mandatory CEUs.
  • Work in a professional, cooperative, and courteous manner, adhering to established standards.
  • Observe all laboratory, Kaiser Permanente, and regulatory agency policies and procedures.
  • Maintain overall safety, including chemical and biological safety, of the department in accordance with established safety, infection control, and procedure protocols.
  • Monitor supplies and reagents and notify appropriate parties of par levels.
  • As necessary and appropriate, perform any clerical or other duties of support staff/laboratory assistants that may be assigned, such as performing phlebotomy on inpatients and outpatients.
  • Accept responsibility for assisting in work areas not primarily your own. Operate computerized laboratory data systems/applications.
  • Participate in direct patient care by providing patients with information to enhance their understanding of laboratory tests, instructing patients on specimen requirements and conditions for specialized testing, and collecting samples from patients, including blood, body fluids, secretions, and tissues for analysis.
