Cardiac Sonographer

We are seeking a highly skilled Cardiac Sonographer to join our team at VCU Health. As a Cardiac Sonographer, you will be responsible for performing diagnostic ultrasound procedures and examinations to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.

• Perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures and examinations to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases.
• Determine ultrasonic frequencies and appropriate transducers for the anatomic area of interest.
• Maintain records, respecting confidentiality and established policy.
• Apply the principles of patient safety during all aspects of procedures, including assisting and transporting patients.
• Receive, relay, and document verbal, written, and electronic imaging orders in the patient's medical record.
• Corroborate patient's clinical history with the ordered procedure while ensuring information is documented and available for use by a licensed independent practitioner.
• Verify informed consent.
• Assume responsibility for patient needs before, during, and after procedures.
• Prepare patients for procedures.
• Apply principles of ALARA to minimize exposure to patient, self, and others.
• Perform venipuncture per procedural protocol based on imaging order from a licensed independent practitioner as applicable.
• Starting and maintaining intravenous access per procedural protocol based on an imaging order for a LIP as applicable.
• Identifying, preparing, and/or administering medications generally associated with diagnostic imaging procedures as prescribed by a LIP as applicable.
• Evaluate images for technical quality, ensuring proper identification is recorded.
• Identify and escalate emergency situations and manage until appropriate LIP, EMS, MERT, RRT, or Code Team arrives to assume control.
• Provide patient education related to imaging procedure.
• Educate, mentor, and general oversight of students and other learners in the Radiology environment.
• Participate and/or perform ongoing quality assurance activities.

• Graduation from an CAAHEP or CMA Accredited Program in cardiac sonography, or Graduation from a minimum of a 2 year JRC Accredited Program in Cardiac Sonography that is recognized by the ARRT or Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography, JRC-DMS or graduation from a Bachelor's degree program in cardiac sonography.
• Certification by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography [RDCS (AE, PE)], or CCI certification in cardiac sonography.
• For new graduates of qualifying educational programs: Must reach eligibility status for certification test within 12 months of hire date and must pass certification exam within 6 months of reaching eligibility status

The Cardiac Sonographer will work in a fast-paced environment with frequent and intense customer interactions. The ability to handle multiple priorities, adapt to frequent change, and work in a noisy environment is essential.

The Cardiac Sonographer will be required to lift, carry, push, and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and may be required to work in a variety of settings, including patient rooms, procedure rooms, and radiology departments.

The Cardiac Sonographer will be required to wear personal protective equipment, including gloves, masks, and gowns, and may be exposed to hazardous materials, including chemicals, radiation, and infectious diseases.

The Cardiac Sonographer will be required to work a variety of shifts, including days, evenings, and weekends, and may be required to work overtime as needed.
