Job Summary

Under the direction of a Professional Engineer 2, the successful candidate will supervise a section within the Traffic Engineering and Safety Group. The primary responsibilities of this position include overseeing design, development, evaluation, and deployment of technology related to traffic engineering and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS).

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise technical staff and consultant contracts in the preparation of engineering studies/designs/reviews/reports and operational tasks.
  • Stay updated on industry standards, regulations, and emerging technologies related to ITS.
  • Develop and review technical specifications for ITS components and systems.
  • Provide technical support during the design, construction, and maintenance phases of ITS projects.
  • Supervise routine maintenance of ITS equipment, including cameras, sensors, dynamic message signs, and communication infrastructure.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate consultant contracts; monitor contract performance and deliverables; collaborate with Contract Management Bureau to ensure consistency with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Review capital projects from a traffic perspective (signs, markings, roadside appurtenance, etc.).
  • Prepare technical correspondence for written and oral presentation. Represent the Department at meetings with local officials and the public.
  • Review, evaluate, and respond to concerns raised by elected officials or the public.
  • Conduct traffic operations and safety studies in response to inquiries from the public, elected officials, or as requested by the Regional Traffic Engineer.
  • Additional duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • A New York State Professional Engineer's license and current registration.
  • One year of permanent competitive service as an Assistant Engineer (Civil/Transportation).
  • Qualified employee of New York State.
