Respite Camp Counselor Job Description

We are seeking enthusiastic, responsible, and caring individuals to join our Weekend Respite Camp team. As a Respite Camp Counselor, you will play a vital role in providing a safe and inclusive environment for campers with physical, cognitive, and/or developmental disabilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist campers in daily activity areas, including meal times, swimming, boating, arts, and ropes, while being aware of their physical and emotional limitations.
  • Assist in program planning based on pre-arranged educational/recreational themes, adapting activities as needed to allow active participation by all campers.
  • Be a role model to help campers have a positive experience with activities and friendships, providing emotional support and encouragement.
  • Maintain constant supervision of campers, providing physical assistance when necessary, and assisting in emergency situations.
  • Observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce safety regulations, and apply behavior management techniques.
  • Care for campers' physical needs, including dressing, feeding, toileting, and showering, as needed.
  • Follow all camp policies and procedures in accordance with state licensing, as directed by the Camp Director.
  • Work closely with Health Office Staff to ensure familiarity with campers' special needs, medical conditions, dietary concerns, safety requirements, and behavioral problems.
  • Assist with incoming and outgoing camp activities, including check-in and cleaning of the cabin and other camp areas.
  • Keep the cabin and camp areas clean, organize camp supplies and equipment, and perform other duties as assigned by the Camp Director or Lead Counselors.

Requirements:

  • Clear background check from local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to interact with campers, coworkers, Health Office Staff, families, and guardians.
  • High School graduate or equivalent, or at least 18 years of age.
  • Desire to work with individuals with physical, cognitive, and/or developmental disabilities.
  • Understanding of HIPPA confidentiality and sensitivity.
  • Ability to assist in teaching and assisting campers with activity participation.
  • Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, compassion, self-control, and team player.
  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations at camp, including emergencies.
  • No use of alcohol or drugs while working or at camp.

Work Environment:

  • Live on campus from Friday 3:00 p.m. to Sunday morning at noon.
  • Work in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, with a focus on providing excellent care and support to campers.
  • Enjoy a free and fun environment, with opportunities to build relationships with colleagues and campers.

Pay and Benefits:

  • Weekends are paid at $260, plus free room and board.
  • Saturday camps are 8 hours at $10.75 per hour.
