Position Overview

SOME (So Others Might Eat) is dedicated to supporting homeless and low-income individuals and families in Washington, DC. Our extensive range of over 30 programs provides holistic services aimed at fostering mental and physical well-being, promoting sobriety, facilitating job training, ensuring living-wage employment, and securing affordable housing. We address immediate needs through food, clothing, and healthcare, while equipping individuals with the resources necessary to lead lives filled with hope, dignity, and increased independence.

Compensation: We offer a competitive salary and benefits package that reflects our organizational ethos, mission, and core values. The hourly wage for this role is $20.05.

SOME (So Others Might Eat) is currently in search of Certified Healthcare Assistants to join our on-call team. On-call staff are utilized as needed to cover shifts, substitute for employees during vacations and holidays, and occasionally assist in facilitating group activities.

COVID-19 Considerations: In accordance with DC Health guidelines, COVID-19 vaccinations and boosters are required for personnel engaged in SOME's healthcare-designated programs, which include Medical, Dental, Population Health, and Behavioral Health Services. Requests for medical or religious exemptions will be considered for reasonable accommodations.

Schedule: Work as needed. Shifts may vary. Availability for daytime shifts is essential.

**Healthcare Assistants must be available for daytime shifts and possess an active medical assistant certification from an accredited agency.**

Qualifications: High School Diploma/GED; a minimum of 2 years of experience in a healthcare setting, such as primary care, acute care, or outpatient clinics.

Required Certifications: Valid Driver's License, CPR/First Aid Certification, Medical Assistant Certification (must be certified in the District of Columbia). Candidates must be willing to undergo a criminal background check, FBI clearance, and other pre-employment screenings, including a drug test.

Essential Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to safely transport clients/residents as needed.
  • Capability to maintain professional boundaries with staff and clients.
  • Proficient in documenting incident reports and monitoring notes as required.
  • Knowledge of medication monitoring and ability to document medical information.
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrate sound judgment.

Key Responsibilities:

Clinical Duties:

  • Monitor and record patients' vital signs.
  • Perform phlebotomy procedures.
  • Administer prescribed injections and vaccines.
  • Facilitate patient discharges per physician instructions and provide necessary education.
  • Execute basic patient care tasks within the defined scope of practice.
  • Address patient inquiries and support healthcare professionals during procedures.

Administrative Duties:

  • Assist with telephone inquiries.
  • Complete required medical documentation.
  • Manage inventory of vaccines and medications.
  • Procure and organize medical supplies.
  • Maintain daily logs and systematically update medical records.

Physical Requirements: Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds. Position requires prolonged periods of looking at a computer screen and may involve extended sitting.

Reporting Structure: Reports to the Manager of On-Call Staffing.

Position Designation: This role is classified as Safety Sensitive, and candidates may be subject to drug testing prior to or during employment. Presence of marijuana in test results may disqualify candidates from employment, even with a medical card.
