Position Title: Director of Underwriting
Location: Remote
Role Summary
The Director of Underwriting will oversee the planning, coordination, monitoring, analysis, and evaluation of the underwriting team’s activities to meet departmental objectives and ensure the organization's profitability through both new and existing business ventures. This role encompasses the management and oversight of all underwriting functions, including the establishment of processes, controls, and follow-ups aimed at enhancing the profitability of active accounts through strategic rate adjustments, commission modifications, and coverage alterations. As a key member of the senior leadership team at Homeowners of America, you will contribute to the formulation of strategies and tactics for Underwriting that foster and facilitate profitable growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and refine underwriting and risk management strategies in alignment with company and market dynamics.
- Identify business development opportunities by collecting insights from internal and external marketing, underwriting, partner agents, and general market feedback to drive new growth initiatives.
- Maintain comprehensive knowledge of regulations, rates, and forms for various products to ensure compliance across all accounts and keep the Legal Department informed of filing updates and priorities.
- Ensure adherence to all company and departmental processes in compliance with insurance laws, regulations, and company-specific strategies to guarantee accuracy and fairness.
- Implement and execute operational plans to achieve strategic objectives and corporate goals.
- Build and nurture a high-performing team, including conducting performance evaluations, analyzing demand and capacity, and designing and implementing training programs.
- Provide reporting and strategic guidance to executive management regarding production metrics.
- Collaborate with claims, committees, and audit requests as necessary.
- Offer expert guidance in technical insurance underwriting matters.
- Serve as the Custodian of Records for HOA.
- Act as the backup Designated Responsible Licensed Producer.
- Engage in corporate strategic planning.
- Contribute to corporate Enterprise Risk Management initiatives.
- Provide technical support to underwriting, customer service, marketing, and claims teams.
- Oversee and direct underwriting audits, philosophies, and procedures.
- Supervise staff through coaching, counseling, and performance reviews.
- Analyze historical data of prospective clients to establish rates for profitable new business.
- Monitor market trends and competitive practices, keeping management updated on significant developments.
- Prepare and review various management reports.
- Participate in meetings with external clients and vendors as necessary.
- Conduct interviews, hire, develop, and terminate staff as required.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required.
- 15+ years of experience in Underwriting, with a minimum of 10 years in managerial or leadership roles.
- Expertise in Property and Casualty Risk Assessment/Underwriting, particularly for homeowners and condo policies.
- Demonstrated proficiency in insurance business acumen.
- Experience in call center environments is advantageous but not mandatory.
- Lead a team comprising 3 direct reports and 16–20 underwriting professionals.
- 220 General License required.
- CPCU designation preferred but not mandatory.
