Job Overview

We are seeking a skilled Model Maker to enhance our operations.

In the role of Model Maker, your responsibilities will include:

Utilizing your machine operating expertise and understanding of materials and processes to create aesthetic models, functional prototypes of innovative concepts, and prototype dies or fixtures. You will assist in project design, development, installation, troubleshooting, and documentation of both new and existing processes, equipment, and tooling. You will ensure adherence to established quality and performance benchmarks by applying engineering principles and cost-effective manufacturing methods. You will analyze blueprints, sketches, or verbal instructions to determine the necessary processes, tooling, sequence of operations, and materials needed to fulfill tasks while establishing acceptable completion timelines with stakeholders.

Responsibilities
  • Evaluate blueprints, sketches, or verbal instructions to identify processes, tooling, sequence of operations, and materials needed to accomplish tasks and set acceptable completion timelines.
  • Design and construct specialized tooling and fixtures essential for fabricating prototype components, performing machine setup for manufacturing operations.
  • Provide guidance to engineers and designers regarding design inconsistencies and manufacturing process constraints. Suggest improvements for part functionality or manufacturability to ensure cost-effective production of high-quality Haworth products.
  • Fabricate inspection gauges and fixtures to assess the quality of components or secure parts for machining or assembly tasks.
  • Oversee and manage workflow within your area of responsibility, minimizing the need for supervisory oversight. Supervise the work of fellow Model Makers to ensure timely completion of parts within specified tolerances.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance on Model Shop equipment and maintain cleanliness of the work area, which may involve frequent bending and occasional ladder use to meet Haworth standards.
  • Assist in training lower-level Model Makers and apprentices to ensure proper equipment usage and support apprentices in achieving journeyman status. May serve as a lead and provide daily guidance to junior Model Makers.
  • Advise supervisors on the scope of external support needed; liaise with appropriate vendors, establish costs, provide instructions, and monitor progress.
Required Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Certified journeyman Model Maker, Tool and Die Maker, Sheet Metal Worker, Patternmaker, or equivalent (equivalent is 6 years of manufacturing trade experience)
  • Minimum of 3 years of upholstery/Pattern Making or model shop experience
  • Current and continuing right to work in the United States without sponsorship
  • Ability to work without relocation assistance
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in Upholstery / Pattern Making
  • Proficiency in CAD; experience with Pro E or AutoCAD is advantageous
  • Familiarity with SolidWorks
  • Knowledge of Exactflat
Ideally, you have also demonstrated the following:
  • Understanding of engineering principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GDT) and Statistical Process Control (SPC)
  • Ability to interpret blueprints according to American National Standards Institute (ANSI) drafting practices
  • Proficient PC and keyboard/mouse skills
