The City of Jackson is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Department of Public Works Maintenance Worker. This role is essential for the upkeep and repair of public infrastructure and facilities.

General Responsibilities:

Under the guidance of senior personnel, the employee will operate various construction equipment to maintain and repair streets, public areas, buildings, and utilities. Responsibilities include:

  • Performing maintenance and repairs on streets, curbs, sidewalks, and drainage systems.
  • Operating equipment for waste collection, snow removal, and material distribution.
  • Conducting general maintenance and minor repairs on machinery.
  • Assisting in the upkeep of equipment at water and wastewater treatment facilities.

Key Duties:

  1. Interpreting equipment manuals for operation and maintenance.
  2. Repairing and installing water mains and services.
  3. Maintaining fire hydrants and water valves.
  4. Operating various utility vehicles and construction equipment.
  5. Performing preventative maintenance on machinery.
  6. Responding to emergency maintenance requests as needed.

Physical Requirements: The role requires frequent standing, walking, and the ability to lift up to 90 pounds. Candidates must have good vision and the ability to focus on tasks.

Qualifications: Applicants should possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. with a minimum of four years of experience in operating and maintaining heavy equipment. A valid Michigan Class 'A' Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required within six months of hire.
