Position Title:
Registered Nurse - Surgical Services

Core Responsibilities:

Delivering patient care through the structured approach of the nursing process (evaluation, diagnosis, and patient outcomes) during the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative phases of surgical care.


Reporting Structure:
Reports to the Supervisor of Clinical Services
Qualifications:
  • Graduate from an accredited nursing program.
  • Valid Registered Nurse License.
  • Current certifications in BLS and ACLS from the American Heart Association.

  • Exhibits thorough, up-to-date professional knowledge and skills in accordance with recognized nursing standards and departmental policies, including the Patient Bill of Rights and JCAHO regulations.
  • Evaluates the physiological and psychosocial health status of patients.
  • Assesses pain in accordance with established protocols.
  • Completes comprehensive patient histories.
  • Communicates relevant information to appropriate staff to ensure continuity of care.
  • Accurately documents patient information and signs records using the appropriate professional title.
  • Evaluates patient understanding and expectations regarding care.
  • Identifies desired outcomes for patient care.
  • Establishes nursing diagnoses.
  • Develops mutually acceptable patient and family goals.
  • Creates individualized Care Plans for patients.
  • Implements nursing care plans tailored to the needs of patients and families.
  • Demonstrates problem-solving abilities and assessment skills.
  • Responds effectively to emergencies.
  • Operates within legal and ethical guidelines (Nurse Practice Act, legal statutes, ANA code for Nurses, and institutional policies).
  • Engages in nursing actions that reflect accountability (demonstrates adaptability and sound judgment).
  • Continuously revises care plans based on patient and family data.
  • Exhibits proper preoperative communication and reporting processes.
  • Ensures accurate surgical case counting and documentation.
  • Maintains proper aseptic techniques.
  • Achieves efficient turnover times.
  • Demonstrates appropriate techniques for obtaining blood products.
  • Ensures proper patient identification verification as per policy.
  • Adheres to surgical site identification and marking protocols.
  • Anticipates the needs of the surgeon during procedures.
  • Engages in professional nursing organizations.

Physical Requirements:
Standing: 66-100%

Sitting: 0-33%

Walking: 66-100%

Lifting: Up to 50 lbs. as required

Carrying: Up to 25 lbs. as needed

Pushing: Up to 400 lbs. on wheels with assistance as necessary

Climbing: 1-5 flights of stairs as required

Pulling:
As necessary while providing patient care

Bending:
Proper bending required to retrieve items from the floor

Squatting:
As necessary while providing care

Rotating:
Shoulders as necessary

Kneeling:
If necessary while providing patient care

Reaching:
Overhead while providing patient care

General Comments:
Adequate visual and auditory senses are essential for effective patient care.

Exposure Risks:
Occasional exposure to fumes, dust, odors, mist, and radiation.
Noise or Vibrations:
Presence of biomedical equipment, needles, sharps, and disinfectants.
Hazards:
Potential contact with communicable diseases and electrical equipment.
Personal Protective Equipment:
Provided (gowns, gloves, masks, head coverings).

Experience Required:
Minimum of 2 years in a similar role.
Education Required:
Associate's degree or higher in Nursing.
Licenses & Certifications Required:
Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Basic Life Support.
