Clinical Laboratory Technician

OBJECTIVE OF THIS ROLE
To collect samples for laboratory analysis. Demonstrates proficient execution of technical tasks in areas such as chemistry, hematology, microscopic analysis, and microbiology. Conducts and evaluates laboratory quality assurance. Performs routine maintenance on laboratory instruments. Utilizes proper techniques and exercises sound judgment in interpreting patient data.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Responsibility 1: Manages departmental organization. Develops training protocols. Provides orientation and instruction to students as needed. Regularly exhibits comprehensive knowledge of current responsibilities. Stays informed about new methodologies in the field through literature and participation in professional gatherings. Actively engages in laboratory staff meetings. Remains updated on communications from memos, meeting minutes, and departmental logs.
- Responsibility 2: Engages with clients using their names and maintains a friendly demeanor. Responds promptly to client needs. Communication aligns with the organization's service excellence standards. Demonstrates effective communication skills, including active listening and telephone etiquette. Performance reflects alignment with the organization's mission, vision, and values. Maintains a professional appearance, adhering to the dress code.
- Responsibility 3: Collects blood samples using appropriate techniques, ensuring clear and complete labeling. Accurately processes laboratory requests and samples. Ensures sufficient supplies are available for designated areas. Maintains cleanliness and organization of the workspace, ensuring regular disinfection.
- Responsibility 4: Conducts routine daily setup and maintenance of laboratory equipment. Accurately records all data, assesses and rectifies any discrepancies. Notifies the Coordinator or Laboratory Director of any equipment malfunctions. Troubleshoots issues or contacts repair services as necessary. Performs tasks with minimal errors, maintaining accuracy and neatness regardless of workload. Assists the Coordinator in evaluating and implementing new laboratory procedures or instruments.
- Responsibility 5: Completes tasks that meet or exceed average quality ratings. Demonstrates a willingness to support fellow laboratory staff as time allows. Maintains an appropriate work pace and adapts to increased workloads. Keeps the workspace organized despite frequent interruptions.
- Responsibility 6: Maintains quality assurance documentation. Evaluates quality control results to ensure accurate test reporting. Adheres to established procedures in out-of-control situations. Demonstrates a solid understanding of quality control processes. Communicates any quality control or equipment issues to relevant personnel, especially during shift changes. Reviews quality control data to ensure high standards of work are upheld.
- Responsibility 7: Accurately records results on reporting forms, including date and initials. Exhibits sound judgment in assessing the accuracy of laboratory results. Consistently reviews additional relevant laboratory data to better interpret abnormal test outcomes.
- Responsibility 8: Demonstrates strong organizational skills to ensure timely availability of patient results. Prioritizes tasks effectively to ensure critical work is completed first. Plans for the efficient integration of urgent tasks into a busy schedule. Employs a systematic approach to all work areas.
- Responsibility 9: Maintains positive interactions with patients and physicians. Collaborates effectively with other professionals both within and outside the laboratory. Consistently presents a cheerful and professional demeanor. Offers suggestions in a constructive and respectful manner.
- Responsibility 10: Arrives punctually and is present as scheduled. Complies with attendance policies, documenting any absences or tardiness.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduation from a NAACLS accredited Medical Laboratory Technician program, including clinical experience and coursework necessary for Board Eligibility for the MLT(ASCP) registry examination.
- Certification as MLT(ASCP) or MLT(AMT) is required within 12 months of hire.
- Submission of college transcripts is mandatory.
- Must possess a customer-focused, service-oriented mindset with effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team setting.
- Must be organized, capable of prioritizing tasks, and thrive in a fast-paced environment with strong problem-solving abilities.
- Demonstrated positive interpersonal and communication skills, along with leadership capabilities.
- Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patient served.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Membership in a professional laboratory organization.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This role necessitates a full range of motion, including intermittent walking, lifting, bending, climbing, squatting, kneeling, twisting, sitting, and standing. The individual must be able to sit for four hours and stand/walk for up to five hours daily. The ability to lift between twenty to fifty pounds and reach above shoulder height is required. Proficiency in using foot controls and the ability to distinguish colors is essential. Excellent verbal communication skills are necessary for daily tasks. This position requires corrected vision and hearing within normal ranges. The individual must be capable of working at a high speed.
This position is classified as "at risk" for potential occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
