Job Description

The Department of Fish and Wildlife is seeking a highly skilled Senior Nutria Control Specialist to lead our nutria eradication efforts in California. This is an exciting opportunity to work on a critical project that protects the state's wetlands, waterways, infrastructure, and agriculture from the devastating impact of nutria.

About the Job

This position plays a key role in coordinating field crews conducting nutria surveys and trapping across the southern portion of the nutria infestation. As a Senior Nutria Control Specialist, you will assist the Operations Supervisor with training, leading, and evaluating field crew technicians and scientific aides. You will be responsible for conducting morning briefings, tracking daily spatial assignments, and ensuring field staff understand project protocols.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead field crews conducting nutria surveys and trapping operations
  • Assist with training and evaluation of field crew technicians and scientific aides
  • Conduct morning briefings and ensure field staff understand project protocols
  • Coordinate with other regions and Department functions to refine detection and trapping methods and tools
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor's degree in environmental science, biology, or related field preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in wildlife management or related field
  • Ability to competently use firearms as per the Department's Policy for Non-Enforcement Personnel
  • Ability to competently use and possess wildlife restraint drugs and equipment

Working Conditions

This position requires working atypical hours and weekends, with some overnight travel required. The incumbent must be able to swim, walk through deep mud and thick vegetation, deal with mosquitoes, ticks, and other stinging/biting insects, rattlesnakes and other wildlife, and work on steep or uneven terrain, in extreme weather, and under physically challenging conditions.
