Position Summary
Under the supervision of nursing professionals, the Patient Care Technician delivers direct patient support. Responsibilities include monitoring vital signs, assisting with daily living activities, and performing specimen collection. This role is essential in observing patient conditions and communicating any changes to the healthcare team to ensure optimal care.
Key Responsibilities
The following duties outline the general responsibilities associated with this position:
- Conducts patient assessments and manages care based on clinical findings.
- Records and monitors patient activities, including daily living tasks such as feeding, bathing, and dressing.
- Documents vital signs, including temperature, blood pressure, and pain levels.
- Assists with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges.
- Implements cost-effective measures to enhance patient outcomes.
- Ensures patient safety and promotes a secure clinical environment.
- Maintains cleanliness and organization of patient areas and supplies.
- Provides compassionate post-mortem care.
- Collaborates with healthcare team members to execute care plans and report changes in patient conditions.
- Ensures patient comfort and addresses pain management needs.
- Records dietary intake and monitors urinary and stool output.
- Measures and documents patient weight and conducts glucose monitoring.
- Administers wound care and maintains skin integrity.
- Assists in the collection of laboratory specimens using proper identification and documentation techniques.
- Provides care for orthopedic and rehabilitation devices.
- Participates in regular patient rounds with the healthcare team.
- Responds to patient-triggered alarms and safety alerts.
- Adheres to national patient safety standards within the scope of practice.
- Identifies and reports safety risks, including adverse events.
- Maintains vigilance in patient care, especially when assigned as a safety companion.
- Utilizes safe lifting techniques in daily tasks.
- Facilitates patient flow and minimizes delays in care.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Geriatric Nursing Assistant (GNA) in Maryland is mandatory.
- No prior experience is necessary; however, experience in a healthcare setting is preferred.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
