Position Overview
The Production Operations Leader is responsible for overseeing daily manufacturing activities with an emphasis on Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost Management, Sustainability, and Employee Engagement within the facility. This role encompasses the entire production workflow, including batching, staging, mixing, and packaging, to guarantee the effective production of high-quality goods. The position also promotes a culture of continuous improvement, standardizes operational best practices, and collaborates on strategic initiatives to enhance plant efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the manufacturing operations of a facility with a workforce of 50-75 and an annual budget ranging from $8-15 million. Coordinate operations in alignment with a master production schedule to meet manufacturing targets safely and efficiently. Ensure the implementation of a weekly production plan for a facility producing over 12 million pounds annually.
- Exemplify leadership by cultivating a collaborative environment that emphasizes teamwork, accountability, and high performance among team members.
- Ensure that manufacturing operations align with support functions, including Employee Safety, Environmental Management, Food Safety, Quality Assurance, Research & Development, Engineering, Customer Service, and Planning to achieve operational goals.
- Lead site-specific continuous improvement initiatives, facilitating GEMBA walks, Kaizen events, and other lean practices to enhance all aspects of the supply chain, including employee welfare, defect reduction, production efficiency, waste reduction, and cost management. Assess and recommend enhancements to processes and procedures.
- Actively engage in the Employee Safety Committee and oversee the safety program for the production team, including the development of training materials, training support, and incident investigations.
- Ensure compliance with Good Manufacturing Practices and audit standards.
- Collaborate with Engineering and Maintenance teams to oversee the implementation and commissioning of capital projects. Identify and resolve process bottlenecks and constraints, recommending and executing solutions, including the evaluation of equipment and software technologies.
- Utilize a Daily Management System to effectively communicate real-time and historical operational performance to all employees.
- Manage and report on Metrics, KPIs, and Scorecards related to plant supply chain performance.
- Serve as the subject matter expert for Autonomous Maintenance, possessing a solid understanding of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM). Implement and train plant personnel on the Autonomous Maintenance program.
Supervisory Duties
- Oversee three production supervisors across multiple shifts and supervise a Continuous Improvement Facilitator.
- Guide, mentor, and develop team members to achieve plant objectives. Conduct regular performance reviews for production supervisors and provide constructive feedback.
- Monitor operations to ensure plant objectives are met consistently.
- Adhere to organizational policies and legal regulations.
- Ensure production staff receive comprehensive training related to their roles.
- Address employee concerns and resolve issues, collaborating with supervisors to facilitate solutions.
- Step in as a production supervisor when necessary, while managing leave coordination among the supervisory team.
- Resolve personnel conflicts and implement disciplinary measures as needed.
Staffing Responsibilities
- Work with the Plant Manager and HR to monitor staffing levels and manage hiring needs within the production department.
- Collaborate with production leadership and HR to recruit, select, and onboard new team members, ensuring effective training coordination.
- Partner with internal and external resources to develop and refine training programs for production employees.
- Manage overtime assignments to align with production schedules and budgetary goals.
- Make staffing decisions based on daily operational needs while considering long-term objectives.
Working Relationships
- Internal: Reports directly to the Plant Manager. Oversees production supervisors and a Continuous Improvement Facilitator, while collaborating closely with support functions such as Safety, HR, Engineering, and Environmental Management.
- External: Regularly interacts with contractors, vendors, consultants, and staffing agencies.
Qualifications
- Education and Experience:
- A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as Food Science, Operations Management, Industrial Engineering, or Business Administration is preferred.
- 7-10 years of experience in Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, or Continuous Improvement roles, with 3-5 years in a management capacity overseeing supervisors and multi-departmental manufacturing operations.
- Experience in environments with robust food safety and quality management systems is essential.
- Proven expertise in designing and implementing Continuous Improvement programs (Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, TPM) is required.
- Certification in Continuous Improvement methodologies is highly desirable.
- Experience in food or beverage production is necessary.
- Ability to interpret and communicate safety standards, operational instructions, and procedural documentation is required.
Physical Requirements
- This role requires frequent sitting, standing, and walking to facilitate effective communication and listening. The position involves both office and manufacturing floor environments.
- Time spent in manufacturing and warehouse areas will require appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Intensive use of computers and telecommunication devices is expected.
Environmental Considerations
- The role is primarily in a manufacturing environment, with some office time required for analysis and reporting.
