The Chesterfield County Sheriff's Office is looking for individuals with prior experience in law enforcement, DCJS Basic Jailor Certification, DOC Officer Certification, or Military Security/Patrol experience.

Selected candidates will undergo a comprehensive 5-week orientation program and will participate in extensive field training to ensure thorough acclimatization.

The starting salary for this role will be based on relevant experience, beginning at $56,741.

Role of a Chesterfield Deputy?

Deputies in Chesterfield County are responsible for maintaining security at the county jail and courthouse facilities, in addition to serving criminal and civil processes throughout the area.

Beyond these core duties, we also act as a supplementary law enforcement resource and force multiplier for the Chesterfield County Police Department during critical incidents, with various specialized teams and assignments.

Our specialized units are dedicated to ensuring safety and security for the diverse and growing population of Chesterfield County and the Commonwealth of Virginia.


Requirements:

Must provide proof of prior experience qualifications.

A high school diploma or GED is required; candidates must be at least 21 years old, possess a valid driver's license, and be a U.S. citizen.

Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, are essential. Candidates must successfully complete a physical agility test, written examination, background investigation, FBI background check (including driving and criminal history), panel interview, psychological evaluation, polygraph examination, and medical assessment.

A valid driver's license and a clean driving record are mandatory.

According to the Virginia DMV point system, candidates must not have accumulated six or more demerit points in the past twenty-four months, or one major violation of six demerit points in the past thirty-six months.

Out-of-state driving records must be obtained by the applicant and presented during the interview. Records must show at least three years of history and be dated within 30 days of the interview date.

Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check, and verification of education/degree are required.

This position operates in high-security environments governed by the US Department of Justice's "Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy," necessitating a more rigorous criminal background check.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or lawful residents of the U.S. for the past ten consecutive years.


This role is classified as Critical Safety Sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing. The use of medical marijuana is prohibited for this position.

Responsibilities:

Maintaining a secure environment for employees, citizens, clients, and inmates at courthouses or jails, courtrooms, holding areas, and special events; enforcing all felony and misdemeanor laws of Virginia; serving warrants, summonses, subpoenas, civil, and other official documents; transporting inmates to and from various jails/prisons in and out of state; working under high-stress, high-risk conditions; maintaining proficiency in firearms, driving skills, and defensive tactics; investigating and reporting criminal activities occurring at the jail or courthouses; assisting motorists in various situations; providing emergency operations resources to the County during crises; serving as a law enforcement resource for Chesterfield Police Department during emergencies, mass arrests, or natural disasters; enforcing all state and local ordinances; providing certified search and rescue capabilities statewide as needed.
