Department OverviewThe Special Care Unit at Bassett Medical Center is a vital 24-bed intermediate care facility, bridging the gap between our Intensive Care Unit and Medical Units. Due to the elevated clinical demands of our patients, we ensure that our staffing levels allow for increased direct patient care hours. Our close-knit team promotes collaborative care among professionals, with initiatives driven by the staff through an active unit practice council. The care provided is dynamic, progressive, and essential to meet the needs of our rural population.

Key ResponsibilitiesAs a Registered Professional Nurse (RN), Acute Care in the Special Care Unit, you will be responsible for delivering safe and effective patient care through the nursing process. Your role will encompass assessing, planning, delivering, coordinating, integrating, and evaluating nursing care based on patient needs. You will play a crucial part in supporting patients through interdisciplinary teamwork.
- Registered Nurse I: This entry-level position is designed for new nurses within their first year of practice, incorporating support from experienced colleagues. All RN I's are expected to complete the Nurse Residency program and fulfill the application and credentialing requirements for advancement to RN II within a specified timeframe.
- Salary Range: $55.13 per hour
- Registered Nurse II: Requires a minimum of one year of nursing experience. If prior experience is not relevant, completion of the RN residency program is necessary.
- Salary Range: $57.36 per hour
- Registered Nurse III: Requires three years of nursing experience, with at least one year in a relevant practice area. The RN III should be capable of functioning as a preceptor and ideally have prior experience as a charge/resource nurse.
- Salary Range: $59.68 per hour
- Registered Nurse IV: Requires five years of nursing experience, with specific educational qualifications affecting the required experience in relevant practice areas. RN IV's must also be able to serve as preceptors and hold necessary certifications.
- Salary Range: $62.09 per hour
Essential Functions:
- Deliver nursing care across the lifespan in various settings, aligned with educational qualifications.
- Accurately collect, analyze, and document patient health data.
- Identify patient problems through thorough assessment.
- Develop individualized care plans with clear expected outcomes.
- Implement and document interventions tailored to patient diagnoses.
- Evaluate patient progress towards established goals.
- Adhere to research-based practice standards.
- Supervise care provided by LPNs and support staff.
- Demonstrate effective management of patient care resources.
- Advocate for patient rights and ensure informed consent.
- Maintain current knowledge and skills in nursing practice.
- Complete required training and participate in nursing research.
Education:
- Associate Degree in Nursing or equivalent vocational/technical diploma required.
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred.
Experience:
- New graduates or those with less than one year of nursing experience are encouraged to apply.
Licensure/Certification:
- Valid NYS Registered Nurse licensure or interim permit required.
- BLS certification required within six months of hire.
Skills:
- Clinical proficiency and attention to detail.
- Ability to multitask and adapt to changing environments.
- Strong advocacy skills for patient care.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to exert up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally and up to 20 lbs. frequently.
- Frequent standing, walking, and other physical activities.
