Position Overview

Job Summary

The Fire Protection Engineering Associate applies intermediate to advanced engineering principles in the planning, design, preparation, and testing of various construction, traffic, and transportation operations to enhance the public infrastructure of the City of Dallas. This role is geared towards individuals seeking to actively pursue engineering licensing and registration through appropriate training and examinations.

Key Responsibilities

1. Collaborates with engineering, architectural, and construction professionals, as well as community members, to review and analyze design documents, ensuring compliance with fire codes, building codes, state regulations, special use permit requirements, and other municipal ordinances.

2. Works closely with fire department personnel and other stakeholders to ensure adherence to Fire and Life Safety Systems and standards.

3. Assesses the integration of life safety, fire protection, and pre-engineered systems based on plan submissions and testing criteria, ensuring compliance with applicable fire codes.

4. Identifies, documents, and reports any deficiencies in plans and systems.

5. Reviews building plans, fire protection system designs, and hazardous materials specifications for compliance with fire codes and standards.

6. Provides mentorship and guidance to junior Fire Protection Engineering Assistants, facilitating their professional development and enhancing project management tools for supervisors and inspectors.

7. Prepares customized reports for program and project managers, detailing plan review progress and maintaining records of plan review and code interpretation activities.

8. Engages with various departments, citizens, consultants, contractors, and government agencies to coordinate activities and disseminate project information.

9. Performs additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Skills Required


1. Proficient in reviewing plans for commercial and residential structures, fire sprinkler systems, fire detection systems, and related installations for compliance with municipal and national standards.


2. Understanding of hazardous materials compliance regulations and systems.


3. Capable of preparing written correspondence regarding plan review requirements and analyzing responses for code compliance.


4. Effective communication skills with various stakeholders including city departments, developers, architects, and contractors.


5. Ability to coordinate plan review, construction, and occupancy activities.


6. Competent in witnessing acceptance tests of fire protection systems and assisting inspectors.


7. Skills in managing detailed data and compiling it accurately into reports.


8. Proficient in Microsoft Windows applications, particularly Excel.


9. Knowledge of municipal and state fire code enforcement practices.


10. Familiarity with the requirements for the installation and maintenance of fire protection systems.



Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical/Electrical/Plumbing Engineering, Architectural/Construction Engineering, or a related field.

Experience:


Two (2) years of engineering-related experience approved by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.

Licenses and Certifications:

Engineer-in-training (EIT) Certification in Texas with the intent to pursue engineering licensing or relevant certifications in fire protection.

Working Conditions:

This position may require non-standard workdays or hours.

Salary Range:

$63,000 - $79,456.64

The salary listed is the starting range; the amount offered will depend on qualifications.
