GENERAL OVERVIEW:
Under general oversight and in accordance with departmental protocols, this role is accountable for simulating patients for radiation treatment planning and delivering radiation therapy as prescribed by the radiation oncologist.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Delivers prescribed radiation doses to designated body areas utilizing radiation therapy apparatus.
- Administers contrast agents when necessary; closely monitors patient status. Provides medical intervention for patients experiencing adverse reactions to contrast and alerts the physician.
- Reviews treatment prescriptions, diagnoses, patient records, and verifies patient identity; confirms actual treatment dosages administered during each session.
- Prepares and assembles equipment such as immobilization, treatment, and protective devices, including electron blocks. Inspects radiation therapy equipment to ensure it is functioning correctly.
- Monitors the clinical progress of radiation oncology patients. Employs clinical judgment to identify and report any signs of complications. Provides reassurance to patients during treatment and halts procedures if unexpected adverse reactions arise.
- Educates, prepares, and comforts patients and their families by addressing inquiries, offering physical support, and reinforcing the physician's guidance regarding treatment responses and post-treatment care.
- Capable of preparing the treatment area and equipment and positioning patients for therapy promptly and accurately according to prescriptions without direct supervision.
- Competent in obtaining necessary imaging as directed by the physician (port films and cone beam CT (CBCT/IGRT)).
- Requires fundamental computer and typing skills. Inputs data into systems and adjusts equipment settings, regulates dosages, and maintains pertinent documentation in the patient chart.
- Maintains patient medical records, reports, and files, including radiation dosages, equipment settings, and patient responses. Prepares precise billing records for procedures.
- Assists in the development of physical and technical components of radiation treatment plans.
- Evaluates, instructs, and supervises the clinical and theoretical education of radiation therapy and diagnostic students following established program guidelines.
- Responsible for the training and education of new staff and completing probationary objectives and evaluations.
- Conducts relevant quality assurance activities (weekly chart reviews, daily billing, daily machine warm-ups, map checks, diodes).
- Participates in policy revisions, adheres to all hospital and departmental regulations, and serves as a safety liaison for the department.
- Manages patient scheduling for external beam treatment delivery and updates treatment schedules as necessary.
- Adheres to work schedules, remains for the entirety of shifts, and engages in on-call rotations.
- Collaborates with other divisions both within and outside the department (physics, nursing, dosimetry, clerical, and physicians, patient escorts) to ensure effective communication and coordinate care as needed.
- Participates in Brachytherapy and EBRT chart rounds as required by departmental protocols.
- Conducts audits of charts upon treatment completion, based on specific departmental needs.
- Procures supplies related to CT simulation and treatment delivery.
STANDARD QUALIFICATIONS

A. Education / Training:
· At minimum, requires knowledge typically acquired through the completion of an associate or bachelor's degree.
B. Work Experience:
· Position contingent upon successful completion of a certification in radiation therapy within 90 days of hire.
· Requires demonstrated knowledge of radiation therapy procedures, treatment plans, delivery, radiation oncology, and radiation safety.
C. Certification, Licensure, Registration:
· Must be board-eligible with board certification within 90 days of program graduation or 90 days of hire.
· BLS CPR certification required.
