School Nurse Job Description

**Job Summary:**

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated School Nurse to join our team at the Alabama Department of Education. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing health education and maintaining a climate of health and well-being in assigned schools.

Responsibilities:

  1. Carry out the health program in assigned schools, including scheduling and conducting screenings and assessments to detect problems in vision, hearing, and scoliosis.
  2. Document and refer students with deficiencies in accordance with Alabama Department of Public Health regulations.
  3. Establish and maintain contact with community agencies and clinics responsible for providing health care for students, staying familiar with their policies and procedures.
  4. Investigate referrals regarding individual health problems and refer to appropriate agencies for treatment.
  5. Schedule and conduct home visits when appropriate.
  6. Work with principals and teachers to plan and carry out first aid and safety education programs within assigned schools.
  7. Advises and assists teachers in obtaining materials and resources to enhance school health education programs.
  8. Assist in carrying out policies and procedures for control of communicable diseases within assigned schools, conducting inspections and evaluations, and furnishing information to school officials and parents.
  9. Maintain required records, compile and submit periodic reports and evaluations regarding the status of the program within assigned schools.
  10. Review immunization records, notify parents of delinquencies, and provide updates as needed according to Alabama Department of Public Health guidelines and state law.
  11. Participate in school staff inservices and professional development activities.
  12. Serve as a member of the IEP (Individualized Education Plan) team when the primary services for the student are health-related.
  13. Provide health-related services to students and assist local school officials in the event of school accidents and emergencies.

Requirements:

  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alabama.
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university is preferred but not required.
  • Possesses a valid state driver's license.

Terms of Employment:

Nine months: Other contract terms and salary to be established by the Board.

Evaluation:

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's Policy on Evaluation of Support Personnel.
