Appointment:

This role encompasses a 75% focus on Texas A&M AgriLife Research and 25% on Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, structured as a 12-month, non-tenure track position associated with Texas A&M AgriLife Research - Beeville Station and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension.

Graduate Faculty status is sanctioned through the Department of Animal Science at Texas A&M University, College Station, with encouragement to pursue adjunct faculty status at the Dick and Mary Lewis Kleberg College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

Key Responsibilities:

This position addresses a vital need for Texas A&M AgriLife Research Station - Beeville Station, a satellite of Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center at Corpus Christi. The focus is on developing a robust, independently funded program centered on beef cattle production systems that utilize grazing lands, including both introduced pastures and rangelands, within the south Texas plains.

The Texas A&M AgriLife Research & Extension Center at Corpus Christi prioritizes pioneering research aimed at enhancing environmental sustainability, production resilience, economic viability, and health and nutrition.

The role involves assembling and leading collaborative, multi-agency faculty teams to conduct applied, systems-integrated research on ruminant nutrition, the interplay between animals, forage, and soil, animal health, and environmental quality, all aligned with industry demands and regulatory policies.

Enhancing the synergy of statewide initiatives through research and outreach collaborations with other faculty at affiliated institutions in south Texas is essential. This includes partnerships with Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center-Corpus Christi, Texas A&M University Department of Animal Science, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, and Texas A&M University-Kingsville.

Collaborative opportunities may involve the development and application of innovative methods, such as remote sensing technologies, models, and critical metrics for evaluating animal nutrition, energy management, and environmental stewardship across various species and disciplines, all aimed at improving cattle productivity and efficiency while safeguarding the environment.

The successful candidate will engage in outreach related to livestock production, collaborating closely with Extension specialists in Meat, Beef Cattle, Livestock, Range, Agricultural Economics, Agronomy, and 4-H to create, implement, and assess relevant programs.

This individual will also facilitate the transfer of research findings and technologies to livestock producers and industry associations, assisting them in addressing their challenges.

Oversight of research personnel, including graduate and undergraduate students, as well as Research Scientists, is part of the role. The research farm, spanning 1,322 acres, is primarily designated for grazing research with the cattle herd. Management and operation of a laboratory and experimental cattle feeding facility are also key responsibilities.

The qualified candidate will serve as Graduate Faculty in the Department of Animal Science, contributing to excellence in measurable animal performance and the adaptation of cattle to tropical and subtropical environments.

Administrative Relationships:

This position, with a 75% research and 25% extension focus, reports directly to the Center Director at Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center-Corpus Christi, maintaining academic ties to the Department of Animal Science at Texas A&M University, College Station. The Associate Department Head for Extension in the Animal Science Department will oversee the extension responsibilities of this role, directing the efforts of senior support staff and technical personnel, as well as graduate students involved in the project.

Qualifications (Required):

A Ph.D. in Animal Science is mandatory.

Experience in beef cattle production systems and quantifiable animal performance is essential, along with the ability to secure external funding through grant proposals. Familiarity with multi-institutional and trans-disciplinary research, development and execution of Extension programming, and a record of publications in peer-reviewed journals are also required. Strong leadership skills and the capability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams are crucial.

Travel for conferences and field research is necessary, along with effective communication skills and proficiency in personal computers and statistical analysis software.

Qualifications (Preferred):

Experience in leading research initiatives, demonstrating the ability to conduct independent research, supervise scientific support staff and graduate students, and publish findings in reputable journals is preferred.

Agency Overview:
Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Service are integral components of the Texas A&M University System, featuring regional research facilities and personnel across various locations statewide.

Headquarters: Texas A&M AgriLife Research - Beeville Station, Beeville, TX.

Area Served: Primarily serves the south Texas Plains and collaborates with scientists from other universities, agencies, neighboring states, and internationally as appropriate.

All positions are security-sensitive.

Applicants are subject to a criminal history investigation, and employment is contingent upon the institution's verification of credentials and/or other information required by the institution's procedures, including the completion of the criminal history check.
