ROLE DESCRIPTION

The Grounds Maintenance Specialist engages in semi-skilled tasks related to the upkeep, care, and enhancement of university landscapes and grounds. This role involves operating both electrically powered and gasoline-powered groundskeeping machinery, as well as utilizing hand and power tools for planting, cultivating, and maintaining the landscape.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts essential tasks for the maintenance of grounds and landscapes, including seeding, watering, mulching, fertilizing, and applying chemicals to outdoor plantings, lawns, and turf.
  • Performs routine grounds maintenance by mowing lawns, trimming and edging around various structures, and managing flower beds using appropriate tools and equipment.
  • Keeps detailed records of grounds maintenance activities, including watering schedules and chemical applications.
  • Handles general maintenance tasks across the campus, including the installation and repair of landscape lighting, signs, and other outdoor fixtures.
  • Regularly inspects and cleans public areas, ensuring the removal of trash and debris.
  • Maintains cleanliness and functionality of trash receptacles in public spaces.
  • Utilizes caution signs to prevent accidents in wet areas and operates equipment to manage leaf debris.
  • Prepares outdoor spaces for events and activities as needed.
  • Safely applies horticultural chemicals following proper guidelines and safety protocols.
  • Operates light vehicles and groundskeeping equipment in compliance with safety regulations.
  • Ensures all maintenance equipment is in good working order through routine checks and cleaning.
  • Contributes to the overall success of the campus by performing additional related duties as assigned.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to read and comprehend work orders and instructions in English.
  • Proficient in the operation and maintenance of groundskeeping tools and machinery.
  • Capability to identify and address plant health issues.
  • Exhibits professionalism and respect in interactions with supervisors, colleagues, and the university community.

MINIMUM CRITERIA

  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Preferred: Public pesticide applicator's license.
  • Minimum of two years of groundskeeping experience, with knowledge of horticultural practices; an associate degree in horticulture may substitute for experience.
  • Preferred: Knowledge of chemical usage and disposal in groundskeeping.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to fifty pounds regularly and up to one hundred pounds occasionally.
  • Prolonged periods of walking, standing, bending, and reaching.
  • Capability to access various facilities, including climbing stairs or ladders.
  • Work is primarily conducted outdoors throughout the year.
  • This position is essential, requiring attendance during severe weather conditions.

SUPERVISION

  • This role reports to a designated supervisor and may involve overseeing student or temporary workers.
