Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Pharmacy Technician Specialist to join our team at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital - New Braunfels. This individual will work under the direct supervision of a pharmacist to perform various technical duties, including assisting with medication histories, training new staff members, and preparing drug orders according to established policies and protocols. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

As a Pharmacy Technician Specialist, your key responsibilities will include:
  • Assisting pharmacists with medication histories and other technical duties
  • Training new staff members on pharmacy procedures and policies
  • Preparing drug orders according to established protocols and guidelines
  • Verifying patient medication records accurately and maintaining complete and accurate records
  • Compounding pharmaceuticals, including non-sterile and sterile products, chemotherapy, and parenteral nutrition products
  • Issuing controlled substances to patient care areas and maintaining records as required by law and institutional policies
  • Providing efficient and timely services to patients and staff
  • Verifying daily activities of the department are complete and recorded
  • Maintaining competency required for current job title/position
  • Maintaining current technician license and ensuring applicable CE records and licensure are maintained in department files
  • Attending staff meetings and completing all competency/skills assessment requirements
  • Maintaining IV certification and competencies
  • Serving as the technician in specialty areas such as the operating room, IV room, or pharmacy work areas outside the central pharmacy
  • Providing ambulatory pharmaceutical care services as assigned, including anticoagulation clinics, intensive medical home, transition of care, discharge medication reconciliation, etc.
  • Performing outpatient distributive functions related to entering prescriptions orders, selecting the correct medications for new and refilled prescription orders, and coordinating delivery of medications for patient pick-up or delivery
  • Ensuring safe, appropriate, cost-effective drug therapies for patients according to established policies, procedures, and protocols
  • Reading, extracting, and interpreting information in patient medical records accurately
  • Detecting and reporting suspected adverse drug reactions accurately and in a timely manner
  • Sustaining the hospital drug formulary, minimizing non-formulary procurements, utilizing therapeutic substitution protocols, and promoting rational drug therapy selection
  • Providing accurate, adequate, and timely drug information to the hospital's pharmacy associates
  • Coordinating pharmacist drug education to patients and their families per institutional protocol
  • Participating in quality improvement and medication use review activities of the department, collecting data, conducting monitors and inspections, and maintaining logs, records, and other documentation as assigned
  • Conducting designated interventions as defined in department Clinical Intervention activities (IV to PO, Renal Dosing, Pharmacokinetic dosing support, Anticoagulation)
  • Baseline departmental standards for reporting interventions for clinical productivity as defined by departmental goals

Requirements

To be considered for this exciting opportunity, you must possess the following qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • 3-5 years of pharmacy technician experience preferred
  • Meet all criteria of Pharmacy Technician I
  • Registered Pharmacy Technician in the state of practice required
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician preferred
  • ACPE accredited IV certification program, including hazardous (minimum 40 hours), or meet minimum State requirement. Not applicable to Ambulatory Care settings or Retail settings

Salary

The estimated salary for this position is $45,000 - $60,000 per year, based on experience and location.
