Job Summary

The Equipment Operator is a critical role within our Material Recovery Facility (MRF) team at Casella Waste Systems, Inc. This position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of all equipment used in the MRF for the purpose of transferring, sorting and/or baling recycled materials.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in the maintenance and upkeep of the MRF to ensure optimal performance and efficiency.
  • Perform pre/post operation inspections of equipment to ensure compliance with Casella safety standards and state and federal regulations.
  • Monitor recycled materials for evidence of unacceptable or hazardous waste and take corrective action as necessary.
  • Inspect equipment regularly to ensure it is operational and ready for use, and perform routine maintenance tasks as needed.
  • Operate equipment in accordance with safety and training protocols, and ensure the facility is properly maintained.
  • Provide detailed information to technicians regarding mechanical issues to facilitate timely repairs.
  • Participate in training and learning opportunities to expand knowledge of the company, products, and services.
Career Path Definitions & Distinctions
  • Apprentice: Demonstrates an understanding of the recycling process and completes all initial required safety training necessary to operate a forklift and recycling baler.
  • Operator I: Demonstrates a complete understanding of Casella's lockout tagout procedures and has the ability to operate equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Operator II: Exhibits development and improvement of communication skills with customers and coworkers, and demonstrates a thorough understanding of the various types of acceptable and unacceptable materials.
  • Lead Operator: Demonstrates a complete understanding of the recycling process and all acceptable and unacceptable materials, and possesses the ability and self-confidence to interact with customers, coworkers, and managers in an effective and courteous manner.
Requirements
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and legally eligible to work in the US.
  • Ability to work as part of a team in a collaborative environment and demonstrate a proven commitment to work and safety.
  • Excellent listening, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Prior experience operating heavy equipment and relevant certifications are preferred.
