Position Summary
Indiana University is in search of a distinguished researcher and innovative leader in the domain of palliative care and oncology for the tenure-track faculty role of Head of the Supportive Oncology Initiative.
The ideal candidate will possess a proven and ongoing record of securing research funding, experience in mentoring students and junior faculty, along with the vision and skills necessary to promote interdisciplinary research and clinical practice.
This leader will exhibit exceptional interpersonal and communication abilities essential for navigating and leveraging existing resources, personnel, and strengths within our intricate, matrixed environment.
Applicants should hold an MD, PhD, or MD/PhD. This position will be supported by one of five endowed chairs established through significant investments in this initiative.
Currently, two endowed chairs are occupied by faculty experts in psycho-oncology and music therapy, while two additional chairs are available for the director to recruit further faculty.
Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) is committed to advancing a substantial, long-term initiative in supportive oncology in collaboration with various partners, including the Walther Cancer Foundation, the IU Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center, and IU Health.
These collaborations aim to 1) enhance the healthcare experience for cancer patients and their families from the point of initial diagnosis and throughout their treatment journey; and 2) achieve this transformation as part of an academic, learning health system, ensuring that insights gained influence cancer care nationwide through the dissemination of innovations and research findings.
In recent years, the academic field of palliative medicine at IUSM has developed a robust infrastructure with support from the Walther Cancer Foundation, other funding organizations, and the health system.
Research and services in various aspects of supportive oncology are also expanding, encompassing physical activity during cancer treatment, psychological support, mind-body therapies, and music therapy.
IUSM is eager to recruit a director for this program, equipped with substantial resources and comprehensive support, to elevate this emerging initiative to new heights of excellence and transformation in cancer care.

The Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics, within the Department of Medicine, ranks among the largest in the nation, with over 300 faculty engaged in teaching, service, and research.
This division encompasses primary care, outpatient medicine, hospital medicine, geriatrics, palliative care, and ethics. Faculty practice across multiple health systems and play pivotal roles in the research and educational missions of the institution.
As a leading academic cancer research center in the United States, the Indiana University Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center (IUSCCC) is Indiana's sole National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer center, providing patient care and fostering multidisciplinary cancer research initiatives.
The IUSCCC allocates significant resources to support research projects, develop faculty, and expand facilities aimed at improving prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer.
Active research areas include cancer pain management, including chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy, cachexia, clinician/patient communication, and patient-reported outcomes.
