Position Overview

A Surgical Services Supervisor is responsible for overseeing a specialized area within the surgical department, including the management of team members.

This role requires a profound understanding of sterile techniques and a comprehensive knowledge of the specialized instruments and equipment necessary for various surgical procedures.


Key Responsibilities

Core Duties

  • Ensure thorough review and verification of case carts prior to surgical procedures.
  • Maintain an organized surgical environment, efficiently passing instruments and supplies to the surgeon.

  • Anticipate and prioritize the needs throughout the surgical process.
  • Participate in the counting of sponges, needles, and instruments as required by the procedure.
  • Safeguard surgical specimens for pathology evaluation.

  • Assist in the procurement and stocking of specialty supplies in accordance with departmental protocols.
  • Facilitate the transport and delivery of items, equipment, and medications throughout the facility.

  • Maintain punctual attendance in line with organizational policies.
  • Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Operate specialty instruments and equipment as required.
  • Collaborate with vendors to provide training on new equipment and procedures.
  • Educate staff on the cleaning and sterilization processes for instruments.

  • Communicate with relevant departments to ensure proper inventory levels of sterile and non-sterile supplies.
  • Conduct clinical evaluations of team members and provide timely performance assessments.

  • Engage in the recruitment and evaluation of potential team members.
  • Foster exceptional customer service within the department.
  • Monitor compliance with certifications and educational requirements for team members.

  • Plan and assess adherence to organizational and regulatory standards.
  • Manage various human resources functions, including hiring and performance counseling.

  • Participate in departmental performance improvement initiatives.
  • Stay informed about legal issues, patient rights, and compliance standards.

  • Actively engage in educational programming.

Qualifications

Education/Training
High school diploma or equivalent.

Successful completion of:
  • A Surgical Technology training program; or
  • U.S. Military Medical Corps Training; or
  • An equivalent on-the-job training program.

Licensure/Certification
National certification as a Surgical Technologist, to be completed within six months of hire from one of the following:
  • Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) - renewed every four years; or
  • Tech in Surgery - Certified by the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) - renewed annually.

  • Maintain current BLS/HealthCare Provider certification.

Experience
Minimum of three years of experience as a surgical technologist.
