Medical Surgical Nurse Job Description

We are seeking a skilled Medical Surgical nurse to join our team at an esteemed hospital in Albany, New York.

About the Job:

This Medical Surgical position involves caring for patients who have undergone colorectal and urologic surgery. You will work closely with Wound Ostomy and Continence Nurses for ostomy and wound care needs. Post-operative patients with TPN, NG tubes, and central lines require careful management, and you will be responsible for their care.

The unit has 22 semi-private rooms, equipped with advanced medical technology, including wound vacs, traction, IV pumps, chest tubes, and more. The documentation system is electronic, and communication is facilitated through Vocera. All shifts are available, and floating is required to areas with competency.

Hospital certifications include Level 1 trauma center (adult) and Children's Hospital within a hospital. This environment demands expertise in post-surgical care, particularly in managing wounds, ostomies, and other complex conditions.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

To excel in this role, you should possess:

  • Experience in post-surgical settings
  • Wound care expertise, including wound vac changes and Cortrak management
  • IV insertion and phlebotomy skills
  • Familiarity with Vocera communication system
  • Ability to work with patients requiring TPN, NG tubes, and central lines
