Job Title: Distribution Systems Engineer

Join the City of New York's Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) as a Distribution Systems Engineer and play a critical role in ensuring the delivery of high-quality drinking water to the five boroughs. As a key member of the Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations (BWSO) Division of Distribution Operations, you will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing the operation and maintenance of the water distribution system.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement plans to maintain and improve the distribution system, ensuring that potable water is delivered at the appropriate pressure and volume to consumers.
  • Collaborate with other departments, including BWS Water Quality and BEDC, to provide engineering direction and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Review and approve contract water main plans, oversee water main construction, and prepare Master Plans for the Trunk Water Main System.
  • Coordinate shutdowns of trunk water mains and regulators, and provide direction for maintaining a constant pressure of 20 PSI.
  • Evaluate and implement changes to the system to provide adequate supply and pressure, and interface with DEP personnel and other agencies concerning related projects and emergencies.
Requirements:
  • A valid New York State License as a Professional Engineer.
  • At least six (6) years of full-time satisfactory experience in chemical engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, or plan examining work, with at least two (2) years in an executive, managerial, or administrative capacity.
