Job Summary

The Collegiate Athletic Trainer is a critical member of the Talladega College sports medicine team, responsible for ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of student-athletes. This role requires a high level of expertise in injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation, as well as strong administrative skills to maintain accurate medical records and facilitate communication between coaches, athletes, and healthcare providers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Injury Prevention and Care
    • Develop and implement evidence-based injury prevention strategies, including strength and conditioning programs, to minimize the risk of injury to student-athletes.
    • Provide pre- and post-game care, including taping, bracing, and stretching, to ensure athletes are prepared for competition and recover safely.
    • Evaluate injuries and determine the most effective treatment and rehabilitation protocols to promote optimal recovery and return-to-play.
    • Provide first aid and emergency care during practices and competitions, ensuring the prompt and effective response to any medical emergency.
  • Rehabilitation and Recovery
    • Design and oversee injury rehabilitation programs, monitoring athlete progress and adjusting treatment plans as needed to ensure optimal recovery and return-to-play.
    • Collaborate with physicians and physical therapists on post-surgical rehabilitation, ensuring a comprehensive and coordinated approach to care.
    • Guide student-athletes in exercises to maintain conditioning and speed up recovery, promoting a proactive and preventative approach to injury management.
  • Medical Documentation and Reporting
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records for all athletes, including injury reports and treatment logs, to ensure seamless communication and coordination of care.
    • Communicate injury status and recovery timelines to coaches, parents (if applicable), and team physicians, ensuring a clear understanding of athlete status and progress.
    • Manage the coordination of referrals to external healthcare providers when necessary, ensuring timely and effective access to specialized care.
  • Team Collaboration and Support
    • Attend practices, games, and tournaments as required, providing onsite medical coverage and support to ensure athlete safety and well-being.
    • Educate athletes and coaches on nutrition, hydration, and overall health maintenance, promoting a culture of wellness and prevention.
    • Assist with concussion management and return-to-play protocols, ensuring a safe and responsible approach to athlete care.
    • Travel with teams for away games and events, providing medical support and ensuring continuity of care.
  • Administrative Duties
    • Inventory and manage supplies for the training room, ensuring equipment and materials are available and up-to-date.
    • Develop and update emergency action plans in collaboration with college staff, ensuring a comprehensive and coordinated response to medical emergencies.
    • Stay current with continuing education requirements and trends in athletic training, ensuring expertise and knowledge in the latest best practices and technologies.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree (Master's preferred) in Athletic Training or a related field.
  • Certification by the Board of Certification (BOC) for Athletic Trainers.
  • Current state licensure (if applicable).
  • CPR/First Aid Certification.
  • Experience in a collegiate athletic setting is preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Work Environment
  • Must be able to work non-traditional hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Willingness to travel with sports teams as required.
  • Physically demanding role that may require standing, lifting, and managing athletes during physical treatments.
Preferred Skills
  • Knowledge of NAIA rules and regulations.
  • Familiarity with a variety of sports and their injury risks.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and make quick decisions under pressure.
