Position Overview
The Senior Automation Engineer plays a pivotal role in overseeing automation systems and initiatives within a regulated pharmaceutical manufacturing environment.

This role involves conducting engineering assessments, suggesting modifications to enhance product quality and operational efficiency by evaluating the components, communication protocols, logic, and workforce deployment of automation systems.

The engineer will identify the necessary hardware, software, and network infrastructure to meet manufacturing objectives in line with product specifications, while also supporting project teams to achieve design, development, and enhancement of process automation.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, install, and qualify automation systems for various processes including batch processing tanks, solvent recovery systems, filter dryers, HPLCs, filtration systems, lyophilizers, ultra-low freezers, HVAC systems, solvent distribution and recovery systems, compressed air, purified water, and wastewater systems.

• Collaborate with production and control teams to refine and optimize production processes by automating both new and existing systems, leveraging technology developed by the Center of Excellence.

• Develop training programs for cross-functional team members on the use and maintenance of new automation systems, including creating roadmaps, enhancing existing processes, and establishing new procedures, job aids, SOPs, and protocols.

• Monitor and troubleshoot automation systems to ensure they operate according to specifications and capacities.

• Support the engineering team in coordinating activities related to the design, development, and execution of automation components for strategic investment projects.

• Ensure adherence to company policies, procedures, and objectives concerning processes, initiatives, and projects.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience.

• At least 5 years of relevant professional experience.

• Proficiency with SCADA/HMI platforms, including Ignition, FactoryTalk View ME/SE, and WinCC.

• Familiarity with industrial fieldbus communication protocols such as Ethernet/IP and ProfNet, along with the capability to implement network topologies for Ethernet and serial communications.

• Experience with Copadata Zenon, Ignition, and PlantPAX SCADA platforms.

• Knowledge of Omron PLC/IO, iFIX, BACnet/IP, and MSTP protocols, as well as BMS systems.

• Experience with OSI PI, Zenon, and MSSQL.

• Understanding of ISA and IEEE standards and industry codes relevant to chemical and pharmaceutical facilities.

• Knowledge of NEC, UL, and FDA Title 21 standards and requirements.

• Technical expertise in automation, controls, instrumentation, batch programming, PLCs, DCS, SCADA systems, and IT/OT networks.

• Familiarity with batch processing and recipe management.

• Ability to manage the complete project lifecycle from design to validation, acting as a project manager across multiple initiatives.

• Experience with electrical and program troubleshooting.

• Capability to safely work with electrical circuits up to 480VAC.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

• Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.

• Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving abilities.

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.

Compensation and Benefits

• Base Salary Range: $110,240 - $151,580
