Palo Alto, California, United States Convectivecapital Full time

About Convective Capital

Convective Capital is at the forefront of enhancing weather prediction models through an innovative and proprietary data source: a global network of advanced smart weather balloons designed to capture critical atmospheric information. We engineer, produce, and manage our own flight hardware and sensors, utilizing the data gathered to generate unparalleled weather insights.

Our objective is to eradicate weather unpredictability, thereby assisting humanity in adapting to climate change, whether it involves forecasting severe weather events or accelerating the transition to renewable energy sources. We envision a future where our balloons are deployed worldwide, bridging gaps in our understanding of the environment and providing essential information for informed decision-making.

At the heart of Convective Capital's mission is the ambition to sense as much as possible, globally. Starting with weather sensors—temperature, humidity, wind, and pressure—this endeavor requires a careful balance of meteorological-grade accuracy, cost efficiency, production scalability, and resilience to extreme environmental conditions. As our platform evolves, we will also develop a variety of additional sensors, each presenting unique challenges and opportunities.

Role Overview

As a Sensors Engineer, you will take charge of calibrating numerous sensor packages and overseeing automated processes for quality control and bias correction of real-time flight data collected globally. As we expand, your focus will be on optimizing these processes and identifying enhancements for the sensing packages and calibration systems, targeting improvements in capabilities, throughput, and quality.

Given that sensors are the only components of our system that can fail without warning, your role will be crucial in preventing errors and managing the consequences of any that occur. Your work will directly contribute to our mission of facilitating humanity's adaptation to climate change, and you will have the opportunity to make a significant societal impact.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop automated calibration processes as we transition from hundreds to tens of thousands of balloons while adhering to strict meteorological accuracy standards.
  • Analyze and address errors within the system, which may arise at any stage from calibration to flight, and create scripts to monitor quality as we scale.
  • Enhance and maintain software for processing real-time meteorological data, ensuring automated quality control and the rejection of erroneous data, alongside bias correction.
  • Propose potential hardware, software, and procedural improvements to sensing systems and calibration setups to boost throughput and/or data quality, collaborating with fellow engineers to implement these enhancements.
  • Work closely with the meteorology team to assess the quality of observations across diverse conditions.
  • Assist in the development and deployment of new sensor types on the platform.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in a STEM discipline.
  • Proficiency in statistics, fitting, and optimization techniques.
  • Experience with large dataset processing.
  • Familiarity with sensor hardware and data source characterization.
  • Proficient in Python scientific libraries (Numpy, Scipy, Matplotlib, etc.) and scripting.
  • Understanding of the fundamental physics behind common sensors.
  • Experience with Linux command line and bash scripting.
  • Knowledge of C and C++ programming languages.
  • High proficiency in Google Suite (Docs, Slides, Sheets, Gmail, Calendar).
  • Experience with digital communication platforms, such as Slack.
  • Strong attention to detail to identify issues before they affect data accuracy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in firmware and electrical prototyping (low-level C, PCB design, soldering, etc.).
  • Background in mechanical prototyping (CAD, 3D printing, basic machining, etc.).
  • Software development experience in a collaborative environment.
  • PhD in experimental physics or electrical engineering.
