Position Overview
In partnership with the nurse manager, oversees staff and operational functions within the unit while providing direct patient care.


Supervises the care delivered by team members to guarantee the provision of safe and high-quality patient services on the unit, ensuring that professional nursing standards are upheld in the clinical environment.

Maintains a strong presence with patients, families, and staff on the unit, particularly during off-shifts, addressing issues as they arise.

Key Responsibilities

Manages a range of patient care activities in a charge nurse capacity to ensure the delivery of safe and quality patient care within the unit/service.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: staff allocation and scheduling; patient assignments; conducting rounds; investigating and resolving patient care concerns; coordinating admissions, discharges, and transfers; ensuring smooth transitions of care between shifts; and facilitating interdepartmental collaboration.

Provides direct patient care in accordance with the charge nurse/clinical registered nurse job description responsibilities. Maintains all clinical competencies as required.
Engages in various patient experience initiatives to ensure that patient satisfaction expectations are met or exceeded.

These initiatives include, but are not limited to:
role modeling; mentoring and coaching staff; conducting patient rounds; service recovery; and resolving issues.
Assists in the ongoing development of staff, focusing on clinical problem-solving and decision-making skills. Collaborates with clinical nurse educators to support the orientation and training of new staff. Maintains documentation related to staff competencies, certifications, and licensure. Acts as a professional role model, coach, and resource for team members.
Engages in various administrative and quality management tasks to ensure compliance with quality expectations and regulatory standards. Ensures unit adherence to departmental, safety, regulatory, environmental, and infection control protocols. Maintains records/documentation related to regulatory/environmental standards, quality audits, or other unit-related record-keeping requirements. Aids the Nurse Manager in preparing for regulatory visits and assessments.

In collaboration with the Nurse Manager, participates in various human resources functions including, but not limited to: interviewing, hiring, evaluating, coaching, counseling, staff engagement, and performance management of unit personnel.

May assist with payroll processing.
Supports the Nurse Manager in managing the unit budget through effective allocation and utilization of resources. Shares responsibility with the Nurse Manager for achieving unit, departmental, and organizational goals.
Contributes to the planning, direction, and evaluation of various short-term and long-term projects for the unit. Develops, submits, implements, and assesses performance objectives for self and the unit. Collaborates with healthcare team members on initiatives aimed at enhancing patient care outcomes. Participates in nursing and/or hospital committees and workgroups as necessary.

Supervisory/Management Responsibilities


This role includes direct and/or indirect supervision of team members, which may encompass final budget authority, hiring/termination authority, performance appraisal responsibilities, and disciplinary authority.


This position is considered part of the management staff at Prisma Health and will have direct reports.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
2 years of RN experience in the relevant nursing field

Required Certifications/Registrations/Licenses

Current R.N. Licensure as recognized by the state

Other Required Skills and Experience
Previous management or supervisory experience
Certification in nursing specialty

All current job incumbents will have a grace period to enroll in an accredited BSN or MSN program and to obtain a BSN or MSN from an accredited institution.

To maintain eligibility for this position, incumbents must demonstrate ongoing enrollment and progress in an accredited nursing program until a BSN or MSN is awarded.
