This essential position involves executing product designs grounded in robust engineering principles while adhering to established business standards, practices, and program requirements. Responsibilities may encompass aerodynamic, mechanical, and electrical engineering across all product lines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary authority on aerodynamic design for the reactor and oxidation system, focusing on aerodynamics, fuel/air mixing, heat release management, emissions control, and performance optimization.
  • Oversee the design and functionality of laboratory facilities dedicated to the development and validation of combustion aerodynamic systems.
  • Ensure compliance with emissions certification standards as mandated by local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Support the evaluation of hardware components, subsystems, and complete engine systems, considering functionality, durability, manufacturability, serviceability, cost, weight, and validation.
  • Collaborate with design, electrical, software, and performance teams to define requirements and create resilient designs.
  • Generate technical reports and conduct reviews to present findings and propose solutions for identified issues, managing discussions on trade-offs and engineering decisions.
  • Lead initiatives to construct, test, and validate prototypes to identify design flaws.
  • Participate in the design review process by examining prints and ensuring that tolerances, processes, and material specifications align with Hyliion's product design guidelines.
  • Assist in identifying and selecting suppliers to meet prototype and production requirements.
  • Support procurement processes and aid in acquiring hardware from key suppliers as necessary.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned or required to meet business needs.

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in the engineering sector.
  • Advanced degree in Engineering (Master's or Doctoral) is preferred.
  • At least 5 years of experience in the aerospace, power generation, or industrial heating sectors.
  • Experience collaborating with governmental agencies (e.g., EPA, CARB) to plan and execute certification testing and report submissions, with a focus on emissions data reporting standards.
  • Extensive background in combustion system development, particularly in gas turbine or similar steady-flow combustion architectures.

Skills

  • Proficient in designing and troubleshooting complex aerodynamic and combustion systems.
  • Significant experience in emissions testing for combustion system development, particularly with gas analyzers for standard combustion product species.
  • Strong expertise in laboratory testing environments, including the installation, calibration, and interpretation of various instrumentation for chemical species, pressure, temperature, and flow.
  • Familiarity with Reactor Flow Networks (e.g., CANTERA or CHEMKIN) to apply finite-rate chemistry models alongside experimental data.
  • Proficient in utilizing combustion analysis models (equilibrium chemistry solvers).
  • Experience in fluid and thermal systems design and optimization.
  • A collaborative mindset with a readiness to learn and adapt through interaction with adjacent functions to resolve complex challenges.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, enabling effective engagement with both internal and external customers.
  • A self-motivated individual with excellent problem-solving abilities, numerical skills, and spatial awareness.
  • Willingness to travel as needed, including visits to engineering providers and hardware suppliers (approximately 10%).
