Job Summary

The Pharmacy Technician - Controlled Substance Specialist is a critical role within the Veterans Affairs, Veterans Health Administration. This position requires a high level of expertise in managing controlled substances, ensuring accuracy and compliance with regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts a perpetual inventory of all vault stock, including prescription pads, using prescribed record keeping and controls.
  • Resolves controlled substance discrepancies and helps mitigate issues caused by staff, referring to applicable policy.
  • Provides data for ordering controlled substances to the Procurement Technician.
  • Maintains full knowledge of the Pyxis dispensing system and teaches its functions to other staff as needed.
  • Daily reviews data reports for stock levels and controlled substances returned to the Pyxis system.
  • Receives computer labels, printouts by patient for controlled substances, ensuring presence of written prescription when necessary.
  • Counts correct medication, recording lot number, expiration date, initials, and computer inventory count on the computer fill document.
  • Assembles medication containers, fill documents, and mailing labels for final check by a pharmacist.

Work Schedule

This position is Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. The recruitment incentive (sign-on bonus) and permanent change of station (relocation assistance) are not authorized.

Requirements

  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
  • Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
  • Selected applicants will be required to complete an online onboarding process.
  • Participation in the seasonal influenza vaccination program is a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP).
  • Participation in the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination program is a requirement for all Veterans Health Administration Health Care Personnel (HCP).

Grade Determinations

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS 6. The Pharmacy Technician, GS-09, requires comprehensive knowledge of concepts, principles, methodology, and policies in a specialized area or section of pharmacy, such as sterile compounding, controlled substances, automation, clinical pharmacy, contact center, etc.

Physical Requirements

The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion, involving standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time, typing, walking distances within the medical center, lifting/carrying (up to 40 lbs) of pharmaceutical supplies, and bending/stooping/stretching.
