Job Overview:

Become a vital member of Salt Lake City's Waste & Recycling Division, committed to delivering efficient and accessible refuse collection services to a diverse community.

Role Summary:

Under the guidance of a Supervisor or Lead Operator, the incumbent will primarily manage a refuse collection vehicle equipped with an automated side loader (ASL) to gather waste, recycling, or yard debris from designated containers along city streets. The role may also involve operating additional machinery such as flatbed trucks, 10-wheeler dump trucks, or front-end loaders as required to assist with various municipal operations. Typical working hours are Monday through Friday, 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM, primarily within a climate-controlled vehicle. Route assignments may vary based on operational demands.

The Waste & Recycling Division is dedicated to providing exceptional refuse services in a responsible and efficient manner. We prioritize a safe and positive work environment for our staff and are committed to promoting a sustainable future for the community.

Compensation:

Level II: $29.05/hr
Level I: $25.78/hr

Key Responsibilities:

  • Receive training in the operation of various equipment used in the Waste & Recycling Division under close supervision.
  • Operate an automated ASL refuse collection truck or a rear load refuse collection vehicle, completing assigned routes daily.
  • Engage in the operation of a 10-wheeler, leaf truck, or perform labor flagging duties on job sites.
  • Utilize a wheel loader or front-end loader to manage debris loading into trucks.
  • Drive a flatbed stake truck for the delivery, removal, or repair of waste containers.
  • Participate in the neighborhood special bulk item collection program.
  • Perform tasks using a range of light equipment and hand tools as necessary, assisting other areas as needed.
  • Conduct routine maintenance checks and document the operating condition of assigned equipment.
  • Complete necessary forms such as equipment logs, weight tickets, and daily work sheets.
  • Communicate effectively with Senior and Lead Equipment Operators regarding progress and issues.
  • Address citizen inquiries and concerns.
  • Assist other divisions by reporting road damage and traffic signal issues.
  • Ensure adherence to flagging procedures.
  • Contribute to the setup and cleanup of special projects.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Level II:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years of paid experience as an equipment operator.
  • In-depth knowledge of preventative maintenance for operated equipment and the ability to perform minor repairs.
  • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class B, with potential additional endorsements.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in operating various heavy equipment relevant to the Waste & Recycling Division.
  • Flagger Certification may be required.
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull weights up to 75 pounds.
  • Strong visual acuity for operating equipment and reading signs.
  • Capability to perform arithmetic calculations for tonnage, mileage, or time.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to engage with co-workers, supervisors, and the public.

Level I:

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Extensive knowledge of preventative maintenance for operated equipment and the ability to perform minor repairs.
  • Utah Driver License with the ability to obtain a Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class B within 60 days of employment.
  • Flagger Certification may be required.
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull weights up to 75 pounds.
  • Strong visual acuity for operating equipment and reading signs.
  • Capability to perform arithmetic calculations for tonnage, mileage, or time.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to engage with co-workers, supervisors, and the public.

Working Conditions:

  • Moderate to heavy physical activity is required, including lifting weights up to 75 pounds.
  • Exposure to various environmental conditions such as extreme temperatures, noise, dust, and potential hazards associated with public roadways.
  • Frequent exposure to stressful situations due to job demands.
