Job Overview

The position of Mate is critical in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of our towing vessels. This role involves direct oversight and management of the crew and vessel operations while on watch.

Key Responsibilities

Primary Duties:

  • The Mate is accountable to the Captain and must act in the Captain's stead during watch periods.
  • Ensuring the safety and well-being of the vessel, crew, and any towed units is paramount.
  • In the event of the Captain's incapacitation or absence, the Mate assumes the role of acting Captain, taking on all associated responsibilities and authority.
  • Familiarity with the Captain's duties and responsibilities as outlined in the operational manual is essential.
  • It is the Mate's responsibility to maintain accurate logs during their watch and document any crew changes in the Vessel Daily Log.
  • Updating navigational charts and light lists in accordance with the latest Notice to Mariners is also a key duty.

Qualifications

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Possession of a U.S. Coast Guard Mate Pilot of Towing license endorsement or a higher qualification.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in tugboat operations.
  • A valid radar observer license is required.
  • Must hold a valid Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC), Coast Guard Medical Certificate, and Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
