Department: Water Department

Position Overview

Employees in this role engage in established protocols to perform semi-skilled to skilled labor associated with various water system construction and maintenance tasks. Responsibilities encompass a range of activities from routine tasks to those requiring more advanced tools and machinery. Instructions may be delivered verbally or in written form. Simpler tasks can be executed with a degree of independence, while more intricate assignments are conducted under the direct oversight of a skilled worker. Work is subject to inspection throughout its progress and upon completion.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure a safe working environment.
  • Install pipes, concrete, rocks, and other materials utilized in the construction, maintenance, and repair of water mains, service lines, meters, and related components.
  • Perform painting and various other semi-skilled maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Service, clean, and maintain vehicles, tools, and equipment as required.
  • Manage the upkeep of Water Department lawns and landscaping.
  • Execute additional duties as necessary.
  • Operate trucks and other vehicles for light hauling tasks.
  • Utilize tractors and smaller equipment as needed.
  • Respond to after-hours calls for water outages or repairs as required.
  • Repair and/or replace asphalt, concrete, landscaping, and other hardscapes as necessary following water system repairs.

Qualifications

Education and Experience
  • Any combination of training and experience equivalent to graduation from a standard high school with extensive experience in industrial construction.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Familiarity with the use and maintenance of various hand tools and basic machinery.
  • Understanding of the routine phases of a skilled trade such as bridge or building construction.
  • Proficiency in using a variety of hand tools.
  • Ability to operate light machinery and mid-size vehicles.
  • Capability to work with minimal supervision while maintaining efficiency and accuracy in job performance.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow simple written and oral instructions.

Physical Requirements
  • Must be physically capable of performing strenuous manual labor in adverse weather conditions and be available for on-call duties as needed.
  • Must possess adequate vision to operate motor vehicles and light machinery.
  • Must have sufficient hearing ability to communicate with other workers and supervisors, both by radio and in person.
  • Must be capable of lifting 50 lbs.

Certifications or Licenses Required
  • Must hold a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (or obtain within six months of employment) and be insurable by the Madison County Commission's risk underwriters.
  • Motor Vehicle Report (MVR) will be obtained and reviewed annually.
  • Must be able to pass a DOT Commercial Driver's physical and drug screen.
  • Must be registered for the FMCSA DOT Clearinghouse if you have a CDL License.

Work Schedule
  • 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
  • Monday - Friday
