The Motor Vehicle Mechanic is responsible for the repair, rebuilding, or overhaul of major components in internal combustion vehicles, including cars, buses, trucks, and tractors. Responsibilities typically include diagnosing issues, determining necessary repairs, replacing damaged parts such as piston rings and bearings, grinding and adjusting valves, rebuilding carburetors, overhauling transmissions, and fixing fuel injection, lighting, and ignition systems. The role requires comprehensive training and experience, often obtained through formal apprenticeship programs or equivalent experience.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensures equipment readiness by inspecting and testing vehicles; performing preventive maintenance tasks such as engine tune-ups, oil changes, tire rotations, and filter replacements.
  • Maintains vehicle functionality by addressing operator concerns; conducting inspections; repairing engine failures; and resolving mechanical and electrical system issues.
  • Confirms vehicle operability through test drives and adjustments to controls and systems.
  • Adheres to state vehicle regulations by testing engine performance, safety, and emissions standards.
  • Preserves vehicle aesthetics through cleaning, washing, and painting.
  • Documents vehicle service and repairs to maintain accurate records.
  • Ensures shop equipment is operational by following guidelines; troubleshooting issues; maintaining inventory; and performing preventive maintenance.
  • Manages inventory by monitoring stock levels; placing orders; and confirming receipt of supplies.
  • Enhances job knowledge through educational opportunities and technical literature.
  • Completes maintenance and organizational tasks as necessary.

Additional Responsibilities:

Handles GSA calls for repair approvals. Submits purchase requisitions to material expeditors. Operates shop equipment safely. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Attendance Requirements:

  • Work hours typically consist of 8 hours per day, 5 days per week. Regular attendance and punctuality are essential. Flexibility in workdays is necessary to accommodate weekend repair needs.

Other Essential Functions:

Must successfully complete a pre-employment drug screening, health performance evaluation, and background check. Professional conduct is expected at all times when interacting with customers, management, and colleagues. Clear and effective communication skills in English, both verbal and written, are required. Appropriate grooming and attire must be maintained to ensure safety and professionalism. Dependable personal transportation to the work site is mandatory.
