Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Job Overview:
The Specialty Class Instructor is accountable for leading classes in specialized program areas, which may encompass dance, yoga, martial arts, arts and humanities, and safety and certification courses, including lifeguard training. The instructor will deliver high-quality classes and ensure outstanding service to members and participants in a safe, enjoyable, and positive environment that fosters wellness in alignment with YMCA policies and procedures.

Hours are flexible and will consist of a few hours each week during daytime slots.
  1. Key Responsibilities:
  • Design and lead progressive classes in your specialty area. Assess and discuss individual progress with participants.
  • Encourage and motivate class participation.
  • Set up and dismantle class equipment, reporting any issues.
  • Ensure classes are safe and effective; respond to and report any incidents.
  1. Relationships:
This position reports to the Program Manager/Program Director/Senior Program Coordinator, who in turn reports to Branch Management. It is essential to learn and use participant names and promote member interaction whenever possible. Collaborate closely with other YMCA team members and program participants.
  1. Qualifications:
Required
  • Formal training in the specialty class being taught.
  • Certifications required within 30 days of hire: CPR, First Aid, and AED.
  • Prerequisite certifications as necessary.
  • Proven customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to independently lead a class and inspire participants.
  • Capability to respond to safety and emergency situations.
  • Ability to set up, move, and store class equipment.
Preferred
  • At least one year of experience in the specialty format being taught.
  1. Work Environment:
  • Ability to lead assigned classes and sessions, demonstrating exercise techniques and performing related physical activities.
  • Ability to remain on your feet for the majority of the work shift.
  • Capability to stretch, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs, moving heavy equipment regularly.
  • Ability to recognize and respond calmly and effectively in emergencies.

Supervisory titles may vary by branch. This job description outlines the primary functions of the position but is not exhaustive.
