Phlebotomy Specialist

The Clinical Phlebotomist is responsible for performing a variety of routine and complex blood drawing procedures in the ambulatory setting. This includes venipuncture, finger and heel sticks, and blood cultures. The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication and patient care skills, with the ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize tasks under stressful conditions.
Key Responsibilities:
Performs blood drawing procedures, including venipuncture, finger and heel sticks, and blood cultures
Ensures quality by verifying patient identification and specimen labeling
Performs point-of-care testing, specimen processing, and EKGs in the ambulatory setting
Registers patients and enters lab orders into the lab computer system
Participates in committee work and performs inventory and audits as directed
Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of employment
6 months of phlebotomy experience or completion of the Carle Phlebotomy in Training Program
Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize tasks under stressful conditions
Strong communication and patient care skills
Ability to maintain confidentiality and work independently
Working Conditions:
The Clinical Phlebotomist will work in a variety of settings, including the South Clinic Lab, Heart and Vascular Institute Lab, and Curtis, Windsor, Rantoul, and Mahomet Labs. The team serves patients from newborn to geriatric in the outpatient setting, collecting blood specimens for diagnostic testing and performing EKGs and point-of-care tests. The ideal candidate will be able to work in a fast-paced environment and prioritize tasks under stressful conditions.
