Position Overview
In this role, you will undertake sophisticated legal responsibilities within your designated area. Your work will encompass litigation, legal research, drafting legal documents, and interpreting relevant laws, regulations, and guidelines.

Under general supervision, you will have the authority to make strategic and legal decisions regarding assigned cases or prosecute complex felony cases in your jurisdiction.

Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct case evaluations, preparation, and management.
- Represent the state in pre-trial and evidentiary hearings, as well as jury and court trials.
- Maintain effective communication with defense attorneys, court personnel, victims and their families, witnesses, and other stakeholders.

Case Evaluation:
Assess criminal complaints to determine acceptance for prosecution, appropriate charges, and necessary documentation for indictment.

  • Review case documentation.
  • Conduct thorough legal research on applicable laws.
  • Interview witnesses and individuals knowledgeable about the case.
  • Gather evidence.
  • Determine the most suitable actions to take.

Draft, file, and respond to essential motions, briefs, and other legal documents for trial or hearings. Explain the legal process to potential witnesses and prepare them for court testimony, ensuring that clients and victims' families are kept informed about the case status. Collect, prepare, and present evidence and related materials for trials or hearings.

Trial Representation:
Represent the State or client during trials and hearings by:

  • Conducting jury selection.
  • Presenting opening statements.
  • Conducting direct and cross-examinations of witnesses.
  • Delivering closing arguments.

Negotiate settlements or plea bargains, securing necessary approvals and ensuring all legal documents are properly executed and filed. Manage court schedules and case timelines to meet deadlines while maintaining accurate records and documentation. Provide training or assistance to junior attorneys as needed. Occasionally, you may perform duties of the Section Chief on a temporary basis. Other responsibilities may be assigned as necessary.

Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school and a valid license to practice law in Texas.
- A minimum of two years and six months of legal practice experience, with a focus on felony prosecution and civil litigation or extensive appellate work.

Special Skills and Knowledge:
Possession of a current license to practice law in Texas is required.

Work Environment:
This position operates in a standard office environment.
