Job Summary
As an Automotive Maintenance Specialist II, you will be responsible for the upkeep and servicing of municipal vehicles and heavy-duty machinery, ensuring that exceptional customer service remains a priority.
You will report directly to the Lead Technician for task assignments and, in their absence, to the next supervisory level available.Key Responsibilities
- Conduct routine maintenance and repairs on all city-owned vehicles and machinery, including tire installation, oil changes, and battery, brake, fluid, and filter inspections.
- Execute advanced diagnostics on vehicle issues and perform necessary repairs on electrical, mechanical, and computerized systems.
- Identify and troubleshoot mechanical problems in various city vehicles and equipment, including those powered by gasoline, alternative fuels, and diesel.
- Assist in the repair and installation of automotive components as directed by your supervisor.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of the workshop and facilities, logging time, materials, and supplies used for vehicle maintenance.
- Be available for on-call duties and respond to emergencies within a specified timeframe; overtime work may be required.
- Ensure the workshop area, tools, and equipment are kept in a safe and efficient condition, while also managing inventory of parts and supplies.
- Review technical manuals, schematics, and manufacturer guidelines to follow recommended troubleshooting and maintenance procedures. Familiarity with computer-based systems such as ALLDATA and Shop Key is essential.
- Possess personal tools necessary for the job.
- Continue professional development and training as required.
- Capable of lifting and carrying items up to 60 pounds and disposing of hazardous materials in compliance with safety regulations.
- Comfortable working in confined spaces and under vehicles as needed for repairs.
- Communicate effectively and courteously with the community, vendors, and colleagues in various formats.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Wear issued uniforms and maintain a professional appearance.
- Adapt to working in various weather conditions.
Qualifications
In-depth knowledge of internal combustion engines (gasoline, diesel, alternative fuel), transmission systems, hydraulic systems, HVAC systems, braking systems, and electronic systems is required.
You must be able to read and interpret maps and complete assigned work orders.Proficiency in using diagnostic tools such as scanners and exhaust analyzers to identify vehicle and equipment issues is necessary.
Familiarity with service manuals and database programs for repair procedures is essential.Ability to follow repair schematics and adhere to occupational health and safety regulations is mandatory.
Expertise in troubleshooting and repairing fleet vehicles and related equipment, along with the capability to safely and effectively utilize various tools and vehicles.
Education and Experience
A high school diploma or GED is required. A valid Texas driver's license with a satisfactory driving record is essential. A minimum of five years of experience in automotive or heavy-duty repair and maintenance is necessary, along with at least three ASE certifications. A Class B CDL license must be obtained within six months.
Preferred Qualifications:
ASE certifications in T5 truck steering, T4 brakes, A6 automotive electronics, A8 engine performance, A1 engine repair, A7 heating and air conditioning, A2 automatic transmission, and A3 manual transmission are preferred.
A CDL Class A driver's license is advantageous. Previous experience with fire equipment is a plus.Benefits
All full-time employees participate in the Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS), with a mandatory contribution rate of 7% per pay period, matched 2-1 by the City. Employees are eligible for retirement after 20 years of service or at age 60 with 5 years of service.
