The Health Technician serves as a vital member of an interdisciplinary treatment team, providing nursing care that requires knowledge and skills as represented by certified nursing assistant standards. Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, the Health Technician maintains acceptable standards of practice and performs assignments independently, reporting unusual, new, or abnormal findings to professional staff.
Key Responsibilities- Provide nursing care to patients/residents of various ages across the adult continuum, meeting personal hygiene needs such as bathing, lifting, turning, and feeding.
- Administer tube feeding via feeding pump, including changing administration sets, and explain procedures to patients and their families.
- Use aseptic techniques to perform urologic procedures and assume a teaching role, instructing patients and their family members in the mechanism of voiding and demonstrating the care of various appliances and catheters.
- Assist and instruct veterans on how to keep lungs clear and use adaptive equipment.
- Make observations and enter information about the patient's condition based on initial and ongoing observations.
- Participate in nursing care interventions consistent with a plan of care, measuring vital signs, pain scale, and weights.
- Perform EKG and phlebotomy for tests as ordered by a physician, and initiate heparin/saline lock and check for patency/inflammation on an every shift basis.
- Perform and document finger sticks on diabetic patients, instruct and assist patients with dressing and undressing in preparation for an examination, and assist with the discharge process as needed to maintain patient flow.
- Employ effective and appropriate communication skills relating to patients, staff, and visitors, using a tone of voice that is respectful, calm, pleasant, nonjudgmental, and non-threatening.
Duties require extended periods of standing and walking, working with residents requires regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, and stretching, pulling, and similar activities, frequent lifting of residents over 50 lbs, frequent exposure to contagious diseases, and rotating shifts.
QualificationsTo qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. The position requires technician experience that requires application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the Surgical Technician position to be filled. In addition to the Individual Occupational Requirement, applicants may qualify based on their experience and/or education as described below:
- GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.
One year of Medical-Surgical experience.
EducationThere is no educational substitution for the GS-06 level.
