Job Overview:
This position is open to SEIU hourly members and the general public. SEIU members must apply within the initial 14 days of this posting to be considered for in-house candidacy. Applications received after this period will be evaluated alongside public applications. Qualified candidates will be invited to participate in a performance assessment and an oral interview, with a requirement to achieve a minimum score of 70% in each selection process to advance.
This role encompasses semi-skilled and skilled tasks related to the installation, construction, upkeep, and repair of water and sewer systems, conducted under general supervision, including lead worker responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Install and remove private water and sewer connections, water mains, sewer mains, meter pits, hydrants, valves, and water meters.
2. Repair, clean, and maintain water mains, sewer mains, valves, hydrants, catch basins, private home connections, manholes, sidewalks, stop boxes, and related equipment.
3. Install, repair, and remove water meters; manage water service operations and address consumer complaints.
4. Record water meter readings using electronic devices; inspect meters and report any issues such as leaks or tampering.
5. Construct catch basins, manholes, curbs, and sidewalks, including setting forms and mixing, pouring, and finishing cement.
6. Perform routine checks and maintenance on hydrants and water main valves, ensuring proper operation and cleanliness; document findings.
7. May lead a crew while executing various tasks and prepare work orders and reports to track parts, tools, and materials.
8. Safely operate various vehicles, equipment, and power tools for maintenance activities, including heavy machinery like backhoes and loaders.
9. Backfill excavations with appropriate materials post-maintenance work.
10. Read and interpret water and sewer maps and utility prints, locating and staking all water and sewer mains and appurtenances.
11. Perform various tasks in the yard and assist in the stockroom as necessary.
12. Undertake other related duties as required.
Job Requirements:
1. High School diploma or GED equivalent required.
2. Minimum of one (1) year of experience in the maintenance and repair of water and sewer systems, including connections, mains, meter pits, hydrants, and valves.
3. Valid State of Michigan Commercial Driver License (CDL), Group (A) with air brakes and N endorsement is mandatory.
4. Possession of Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy S-4 Certification is required, with the ability to obtain S-3 Certification within two testing cycles.
5. Knowledge of basic construction, repair, and maintenance methods, tools, equipment, and materials is essential.
6. Familiarity with safe work practices in hazardous conditions, including confined space entry and working in public rights-of-way.
7. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and construction drawings, applying learned information to specific situations.
8. Proficiency in using computers and mobile devices for data collection and communication is necessary.
9. Must maintain an acceptable attendance record.
10. Ability to safely operate common hand tools, power tools, and equipment, including excavators and dump trucks; must maintain a forklift operator license.
Physical Requirements:
This position requires regular exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; frequent standing, walking, climbing, and balancing; and occasional stooping, kneeling, or crawling. Special vision requirements include close and distance vision, depth perception, and color perception. Vocal communication is necessary for clear instruction, and hearing is required for detailed oral communication. Work is often performed in outdoor conditions with exposure to mechanical parts and vibrations.
