Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Surgical Technologist to join our team at Blue Mountain Hospital District. As a Surgical Technologist, you will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth operation of our operating rooms.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare operating rooms for surgical procedures, ensuring all necessary equipment and supplies are available.
  • Assist surgeons during operative and invasive procedures, maintaining a sterile environment and adhering to aseptic technique.
  • Monitor inventory of supplies and surgical instruments, ordering replacements as needed.
  • Participate in Quality Improvement initiatives and attend department staff meetings to stay informed about best practices.
  • Interact professionally and respectfully with patients and families, prioritizing their dignity, safety, and privacy.
  • Identify and address psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families.
  • Provide patient education and verbal reassurance as needed, closely observing patients with minimal disturbance.
  • Maintain a safe environment for patients, coworkers, and self, adhering to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Adapt procedures to meet individual needs of patients, including neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.
  • Prepare rooms in a timely manner with all anticipated instruments, sutures, supplies, and equipment for each surgical procedure.
  • Demonstrate competence in care of specimens and accurately handle specimens at all times.
  • Assist in positioning, prepping, and draping patients for surgical procedures.
  • Notify licensed staff when patients complain of pain.
  • Accurately complete operating room counts (instruments, sponges, needles) and follow proper procedure in the event of an incorrect count.
  • Carry out medical/surgical asepsis during treatments/procedures.
  • Check equipment/instruments needed prior to each procedure to ensure proper functioning.
  • Follow aseptic technique when opening sterile supplies and setting up procedures.
  • Be fully responsible for care of instruments/equipment during intra/postoperative phase, including cleaning and processing of instruments.
  • Follow written procedures for steam sterilization and know responsibilities and the necessity for chemical and biological monitoring.
  • Perform all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/healthcare errors.
  • Maintain an orderly and sterile instrument table for efficiency, following department standard setup.
  • Support and maintain a culture of safety and quality.
  • Perform services requiring technical or manual skills under the direction of the Circulating RN.
  • Pass instruments and supplies to the surgeon during procedures.
  • Anticipate needs of the surgeon during intraoperative phase.
  • Hold retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon.
  • Clean and prepare rooms between procedures and after the last case, restocking supplies as needed and organizing effectively for end-of-case clean up.
  • Complete documentation within the shift and meet current standards, policies, and procedures.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Graduate of Surgical Technology Program
  • Active/Unencumbered Surgical Technologist Certification (CST) through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of working experience in the Operating Room
