Job Overview

Position Summary: The Aquatics Program Supervisor, under the guidance of the Aquatics Director and in alignment with the policies of the YMCA of Southwest Florida, will lead and enhance the operations of the Aquatics Department. This role encompasses overseeing lifeguards, swim instructors, and team swim activities, while ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals in and around the YMCA pool.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate the development and execution of regular in-service training sessions for lifeguard personnel.
  • Support the recruitment, training, scheduling, and management of Aquatics staff as necessary.
  • Participate in staff performance evaluations and help devise strategies to inspire staff and meet objectives.
  • Contribute to the creation of new program initiatives and the expansion of existing offerings within the community, in line with strategic and operational plans.
  • Assist in the review of timesheets and ensure timely payroll management for the Aquatics Department.
  • Monitor aquatic operations to comply with all relevant health and safety regulations.
  • Act as the primary contact for risk management within the Aquatics Department at the assigned branch.
  • Compile program statistics and assess the effectiveness and participation rates of programs.
  • Coordinate the scheduling of activities and events.
  • Assist in the preparation and distribution of program calendars and newsletters.
  • Support YMCA fundraising initiatives and special events.
  • Attend all Aquatics Cabinet meetings.
  • Maintain vigilant supervision of the pool during assigned shifts.
  • Possess knowledge of water testing protocols and perform water quality tests as directed.
  • Address all pool maintenance issues promptly.
  • Ensure proper storage of all equipment following shifts.
  • Complete training and adhere to all departmental policies and procedures, including privacy and security protocols.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

*On-site attendance is mandatory for this role.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

  • The physical demands outlined here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully execute the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.
  • While performing the duties of this role, the employee is regularly required to climb in and out of lifeguard chairs, remain seated or standing for extended periods, and enter and exit the pool as necessary. This individual must use hands to handle objects, reach with arms, and communicate effectively. The employee must be capable of frequently lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds.
  • Must possess sufficient strength, agility, and mobility to perform essential functions and supervise activities in various indoor and outdoor settings.
  • Specific vision abilities required for this position include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Extended exposure to sunlight and outdoor elements, as well as warm and humid environments, is expected. The position may require working independently and without supervision for extended periods. Exposure to chlorine and other pool chemicals is also anticipated.

Qualifications:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • A minimum of 2 years of relevant experience is required.
  • At least 1 year of supervisory experience, including team management, is preferred.
  • Current certification in lifeguarding from YMCA, Redcross, StarGuard, or another nationally recognized organization is required.
  • Must successfully complete a criminal history background check as per state requirements and meet the Association's background screening policies.
  • Must adhere to a drug/alcohol/smoke-free workplace policy.

Certification and Training Requirements:

  • YUSA Lifeguard Certification (must be obtained within 30 days, including completion of the Crossover course).
  • YUSA Aquatics Trainer/Instructor: Lifeguard and Swim Lesson (must be completed within 120 days of employment).
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certification is preferred.
  • Completion of the YMCA's Blood Borne Pathogens and Child Sexual Abuse Prevention training is required.
  • Additional training classes as recommended by the supervisor.
