In our Family Maternity Center, we provide a serene atmosphere featuring private rooms, soft lighting, infant warmers, and all essential monitoring equipment. Our state-of-the-art operating rooms are specifically designed for caesarean deliveries, ensuring that our services, including anesthesia, are available around the clock to meet our patients' needs.
As an Operating Room Specialist, you will assist in circulating duties under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Your responsibilities will encompass, but are not limited to:
- Preparing the sterile field and executing scrub functions.
- Assisting in draping the patient and facilitating the gowning and gloving of surgical team members.
- Collecting, identifying, and labeling specimens obtained during surgical procedures, ensuring proper handoff to the circulator.

Key Responsibilities:
- Prepares the sterile field, ensuring all necessary supplies, medications, and equipment are ready.
- Collaborates with the RN to count all sponges, instruments, and materials at designated times during surgical procedures.
- Assists in draping the patient.
- Aids surgical team members with gowning and gloving.
- Maintains aseptic conditions throughout the procedure and actively participates in the intraoperative "timeout" for patient safety.
- Implements additional safety measures, including safety belts and positioning devices.
- Collects, identifies, and labels specimens during surgical procedures, handing them to the circulator as per the surgeon's instructions.
- In an outpatient setting, may perform the following duties:
- Coordinates surgical and clinical schedules.
- Facilitates outpatient clinic operations.
- Provides information to patients and their families.
- Assists in organizing outpatient procedure room cases and supplies.
- Aids in the orientation of new hires.
- Participates in unit committees.
- Contributes to marketing and practice development initiatives.
- Coordinates studies for the section.
- Answers patient inquiries and relays information to providers.
- Conducts post-operative follow-up calls and communicates information to providers.
- Provides patient information based on provider instructions.
- Scribes for providers in outpatient clinics.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education Requirements:
- If hired prior to August 1, 2015: Completion of a Surgical Technology Program accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES, or completion of a military surgical technology program is required. Licensed Practical Nurse qualifications will also be accepted.
- If hired on or after August 1, 2015: Completion of a Surgical Technology Program accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES is required. A military surgical technology program will also meet the educational requirements. Certification as a Surgical Technologist waives the educational requirement for hire. Acceptable certifications include TS-C (through the National Center for Competency Training) or CST (through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting).
Certifications:
- Certification is preferred for candidates from accredited surgical technology programs. Certification (CST, TS-C) is required for candidates who have not completed an accredited Surgical Technology program.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) is required.
Work Complexity:
- The role requires critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Must be capable of functioning in a high-pressure environment.
- Must establish and maintain courteous and cooperative relationships with patients and others, demonstrating empathy for those experiencing physical or emotional challenges.
Experience:
- No prior experience is required.
Physical Requirements:
- Requires full range of body motion, including handling and lifting patients, manual dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.
- Requires prolonged standing and walking.
- Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 25 pounds and navigates supply carts weighing over 75 pounds periodically.
- Requires corrected vision and hearing within normal ranges.
- Must be able to work under stressful conditions and irregular hours.
- Exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids may occur.
- Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Physical demand requirements exceed those for Light Work.
Personal Protective Equipment:
- Adheres to standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.
