Nurse Specialist Role at Avera McKennan Hospital

The Nurse Specialist, in the role of a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE), provides specialized medical-forensic care to patients of all ages who present with reports of sexual assault. This role involves operating independently during exams for adolescents and adults, mentoring clinicians, and ensuring trauma-informed care.

This position requires a licensed Registered Nurse in the state of South Dakota or meeting the enhanced Nursing Compact Licensure (eNLC) requirements. Successful completion of 40-hour didactic training with an IAFN-recognized SANE training program is also required.

Responsibilities include responding to and offering medical-forensic services to patients of all ages who present to a covered facility with reports of sexual assault/violence. The SANE RN will operate independently in the medical-forensic exam for patients in the adolescent age (post-pubescent) and above/adults. For patients in the pediatric/pre-pubescent age, if pediatric sexual assault training has been completed, the SANE will operate independently; otherwise, the SANE will assist a provider with the medical-forensic exam.

Required skills and qualifications include the ability to pass national background and sex offender screenings, as well as state child abuse and neglect screenings. Completion of the Child Abuse & Dependent Adult Abuse courses for Iowa Mandatory Reporters within 90 days of employment and every 3 years thereafter is also required. Two years of nursing experience in Critical Care/ED/Women's Center or prior SANE experience are preferred. Tele-health experience is also desirable.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide medical-forensic care to patients of all ages who present with reports of sexual assault.

  • Educate staff on trauma-informed care and the neurobiology of trauma.

Requirements:

  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the state of South Dakota or meeting the enhanced Nursing Compact Licensure (eNLC) requirements.
